Rossi, and Kathleen Daly, Under the Gun: Weapons, Crimes and Violence in America, National Institute of Justice, United States Department of Justice, NY: Aldine de Gruyter Press, 1983), p. 86. Professors Wright, Rossi, and Daly, are sociologists at the University of Massachusetts and are not, and have never been, affiliated with any pro- or anti-gun organizations. Peter Rossi is a former president of the American Sociological Association.

Their research was undertaken on behalf of the National Institute of Justice, United States Department of Justice and subsequently puiblished in book form in 1983. Both Under the Gun and Point Blank are considered seminal works on the subject of firearms and violent crime.
