In 1990, approximately 35,717 Canadians died as a result of smoking, 422 died as a result of drug abuse, and 18,624 deaths were recorded as alcohol-related.

In 1989-1990, there were 39,357 alcohol-related separations (discharge or death of a patient) from Canadian mental and general hospitals and 21,507 separations for drug-related disorders.
