Can anyone enlighten us as to when it was held and where? Who attended would be of interest as well as many of us had heard nothing about this until that posting. I have heard that the Iron Maiden , the justice ministers "hit" woman attended. I use the term "hit" in relation to the hundreds of jobs she has slashed as the Firearms Centers plunge into disaster and the whole mess is shoveled into the darkness of privatization. Some "favored" patronage group will be given huge amounts of money from HRDC to "appear" to save teh day and take the blame for the $Billion Dollar boondoogle. Perhaps jane Stewart was kept on after Her "lose" of 4 Billion because they needed someone to make another Billion or two "dissappear." Lets hope no Firearms Groups are conspiring to assist in this new line of attack! The NFA was not at any of these meetings , having agreed with other Firearms Groups that they would not attend if no one was there with the authority to change legislation. Hopefully it will turn out that no group who agreed to that deal did in fact attend. Anyone have the information on these "meetings" , what they were about , where they were held and who attended would be appreciated. Whatever the anti- firearms folks are peddling , the best thing for us is to wait till Dec 31, 2002 beofre even dropping a registration document in the mail - if we are going to do that at all. Remember non compliance and refusing to become paid informants (verifiers) has caused the Firearms Act to falter badly. Solidarity will eventually destroy it. By the end of 2002 they will have our numbers revised to 50,000 or so . So far 5 million have dissappeared in 2 years without even a murmer from Health Canada of the CPPC folks. Bloody amazing to have one sixth of the population dissappear from the tax paying roles without even a murmer from the Government Anyway , back on track, if there is any information about these meetings please share it with us. If you are shy send it privately and I will not forward or post it. One easy solution to grammar and spelling problems: Microsoft Word. The program automatically checks your spelling and grammar as you type. Errors are underlined so you can identify and correct problems. This tool can make you more effective as a writer -- and better prose might mean that you can reach and influence more of your target audience. I think that the quest was not to keep people from speaking out, but to ask that the "spell checker" subroutine be run. They don't pick up on bad grammar, usually, but basic spelling mistakes can usually be picked up by a checker and corrected. Please, it's important that people who wish to retain their access to firearms speak, so if you have valid input, send it - but - if people take a few seconds to scan with a spell checker we'll perhaps learn the correct spelling of what 's been typed? I'm usually pretty good with spelling but I check - typos appear everywhere. I am a second generation resident of the State of California, a mother and a grieving grandmother. I wish to express to you how trigger locks and mandatory storage laws in the State of California affected my family. I hope my testimony may save someone in your state from sharing the pain we must now endure for the remainder of our lives. No law you can pass will keep the irresponsible from shooting accidents or a felon from stealing a gun. I am enclosing a portion of a letter I wrote to my own state legislators concerning the constant progression of laws restricting our guns in my state. Depending on whether or not you truly care, you may or may not recognize my name. I am the paternal grandmother of the two children who were brutally murdered inside their rural Merced California home on August 23, 2000 by a stranger with a pitchfork. Instead of suing gun manufacturers, I am of the opinion it is our lawmakers who need to be sued. It was you who created the laws that kept my grandchildren from being able to defend themselves with any weapon greater than their bare hands. All of my son's children had been trained in the use of firearms but were unable to get to their Dad's weapon because of California State Law. You, who have CCW permits or armed bodyguards, or both expect me to face a society gone mad because of drug-altered brains and lax laws on the perpetrators of crime? You had no room in your prisons for the killer of my grandchildren though his wife had reported to the police in Mojave California in June of 1997 that he had forced her and their infant son into his car (kidnapping) while living in southern California? At that time she also reported how she had managed to escape from him in Mojave after he held a gun to her head (assault with a deadly weapon) threatening to kill her and their one-month-old child? Though more recently she had given to the Dos Palos California Police Dept. the tape from her message minder threatening to kill her present husband? Though he had assaulted a police officer while resisting arrest for drug charges? Though he had violated his parole by not appearing at his hearing and they had a warrant out for his arrest? Though they knew where he lived, and also his mother and grandmother, yet failed to pick him up? Will you then find room for my son in your prisons should his fourteen-year-old daughter have access to his gun while she is babysitting her siblings? There is a growing list, in my area alone, of people (mostly women) who might still be alive had they not been in a state where the use of a gun was prohibited. Juli Sund, Carole Sund, Selvina Pelosso, Joie Armstrong, Ashley and John William Carpenter to name a few. Lawmakers talk big about a woman's right to choose yet don't allow me the very basic right to choose to defend myself? If teachers were allowed to carry a concealed weapon to school you would see the school shootings disappear. The same is true with the citizen on the street. The reason is, these killers are cowards. You can tell by their choice of victims. They operate best where they know there are no guns. Look at your child tonight and imagine him or her with their eyes jabbed out, their skulls splintered, their brains pierced, and their spines broken with the heavy tines of a spading fork. In defending her sisters to the death with the only weapon you allowed her, Ashley had 138 puncture wounds. Twenty-nine of them were on the right side of her face, five on the back of her head, and thirty-seven to her chest and lower neck. (Obviously he was trying to behead her.) She was nine years old. While committing no crime greater than sleeping in his parents bed, in his own house, John William, 7 years old, was stabbed 46 times, with most of them in the chest, neck, and head. Depending on the condition of your heart, you may or may not feel a small measure of the pain my family and I must endure for the remainder of our lives. Now, imagine all the gun laws you can dream up and honestly admit whether or not they would have stopped such a mad dog as this. This man was a total stranger to the family, and other than a trace of marijuana, was not on drugs at the time. However, by the testimony of his wife and girlfriend, he was a drug user who became frightening whenever he used them. All your imagined gun laws will do is insure someone's children will die again. Take a drive downtown and see for yourself all the drug addled brains. You may declare gun free zones, but you cannot declare killer free zones. This tragedy has made me realize I am not even safe in my locked home, my barn, or my backyard. I dare you to request the autopsy reports of John William & Ashley Danielle Carpenter done on August 28,2000 from Sheriff Tom Sawyer of the Merced County Sheriffs Dept. Also ask him for the police interview with the killer's wife and girlfriend telling about his drug use and devil worship. Ask Detective Parsley about his fetish for horror movies produced by a John Carpenter, (no relation to us), and one he especially liked, that we have learned depicts a killing done with a pitchfork. His last employment was as a telemarketer in Merced. If you have an honest bone in your body you will see this country is in desperate need of a change of heart not the gun laws that have been in place for over two hundred years. All the gun laws you can imagine cannot change the heart of a killer and you know it. Until man's heart is changed, we will be like sheep led to the slaughter without our weapons of defense. May you stand before God and man as my two precious grandchildren's killer if you pass any more gun legislation that will make me a felon should I own a handgun or any other gun for that matter. Sincerely, Mary Carpenter - -------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 23:43:19 -0600 From: John Coupland Subject: Re: digest submissions Hi, Merry-Sue, I would like to point out that many of the contributors to this digest are using English as a second, or even later, language. To condemn their inadvertent lapses in the use of our mother tongue may make them self-conscious to the point of non-participation. Whilst laziness and conscious negligence are to be deplored, honest error or the occasional typo can happen to any of us. "Humourous" spellings, or distortions ("lieberal", "Kanada Kustoms:", "Cretin":- I'm surprised that nobody has started using "Marionette") pall with me very quickly. OTOH, acronyms (IMHO a true linguistic mutation and evolutionary trend) have the dual advantage of underlining the prevalence of phrasal clichés and sparing my (always scarce) typing skills. I take grave exception to your suggestion "And remember, even the computer makes mistakes." This is as flagrant a fallacy as the "Guns kill people" mantra we so detest. A computer is a tool; the mistakes all occur between the chair and the keyboard. Newsworld is discussing "sports" at the moment, and are quoting from some polls that were done. Not only is sports a low priority for government spending according to the polls, but the polls on "if" it is to be spent, "how" should it be spent, are rather revealing. Top priority for spending was "personal fitness". Other categories were regarding facilities, and regarding "kids" sports. BOTTOM on the list was "Olympic Sports", with only about 5 percent of the votes. Boy I bet that makes our Olympians feel good. (NOT!) Is it any wonder that it is harder and harder to get young people involved in the shooting sports, if this is the mindset of many? Did the "social engineering" start a long time ago, making the young believe the competition aspect of such sports wasn't something to reach for? Also, there is a very disappointing commercial for the Summer Games here in BC. During the commercial, all the different sports of the games are flashed on the screen, one at a time. All that is, except shooting. Hmmmmm. My husband has been in the Summer Games for shooting several times now, and is currently starting to prepare for the next Games (he's a zone rep), but the people doing the commercial did not find it important enough to even flash for the seconds that it appears. ARTICLE IN THE GLOBE & MAIL ============================ A police state in the making Our government forgot to practise what it preached, says SINCLAIR STEVENS, when it trampled democracy in Quebec City Tuesday, April 24, 2001 I never thought I'd be writing this article, surely not in Canada. There aren't many people in this country who view free trade as positively as I do. As industry minister in the Mulroney government, I participated in the 1985 Shamrock Summit that set the stage for our trade agreement with the United States. I was even responsible for replacing the Foreign Investment Review Agency with Investment Canada, a welcome mat for our partners to the South. There also aren't many people who view the maintenance of law and order as a higher priority than I do. But this past weekend, I was shocked by events in Quebec City. Shocked by what I saw, and stunned by what my wife, Noreen, and I personally experienced. I believe Canada is right to view free trade as a model for democratic development in every corner of our hemisphere, and I was delighted to see us host the Summit of the Americas. But our government is dead wrong to behave in a manner that suggests we have forgotten what democracy is all about. Noreen and I arrived in Quebec City last Friday at about 5 p.m. We had heard about the so-called security fence and wanted to see it firsthand, to walk along beside it. My first view of the fence was in front of the Château Frontenac. It brought back memories of many happy visits to that hotel. But, this weekend, I could not enter: The hotel was inside the fence, I was outside. As we walked around the perimeter, a 40-year-old chap passed us, and asked: "Where is your gas mask?" I asked what he meant. He said: "There is gas farther on -- watch out." We continued until we saw our first contingent of riot-geared police lined up three deep behind a closed gate. They were an intimidating sight -- in battle dress, with helmets, masks, shields and assorted elaborate weapons. I was glad, th is time, that they were inside the fence and we were outside. Farther on, just before we got to Dufferin Street, there were perhaps 50 people -- protesters, it turned out -- who were standing or sitting on a small side road. At the end of the road, we saw a much larger group of riot police standing shoulder-to-shoulder, several rows deep. The road was well away from the security fence. In fact, the fence was nowhere in sight. I spoke with many of the people in the street, asked them why they had gathered, why they opposed the free trade proposals. It was a lively but friendly exchange. We were interrupted as the police down the road began an eerie drumming, rattling their riot sticks against their shields. Slowly, in unison, one six-inch step at a time, they began marching toward us. Noreen and I moved to the side of the street, as the protesters remained stationary. Some formed V signs with their fingers. To my horror, the police then fired tear gas canisters directly at those sitting or standing on the road. As clouds of gas began to spread, Noreen and I felt our eyes sting and our throats bake. We pulled whatever clothing we could across our mouths. One young woman, who had been among the protesters, offered us some vinegar. "What's that for?" I asked. "It takes away the sting," she said. And it did help. The police, however, kept advancing. One large policeman with the number 5905 on his helmet, pressed right against me and ordered me to get behind a railing. "I haven't done anything," I protested. "Why?" He simply replied: "Get behind the rail." Then he added, "and get down." I did so. I shook my head. I never thought I would ever see this kind of police-state tactic in Canada. What we witnessed that night was mild compared to events the next afternoon. This time, walked along the fence until we reached the gate at René Lévesque Boulevard, where a great crowd had gathered that included TV cameras and reporters. I was asked for an interview by a CBC crew but, before we could begin, dozens of tear gas canisters were fired, water cannons were sprayed and rubber bullets began to hit people nearby. Three times, I felt could not breathe, my eyes were sore and all I could do was run. In the bedlam, my wife and I were separated for almost three hours. She said she had almost passed out from the gassing. We lost something else, besides each other, last weekend in Quebec: our innocence. This government, and some reporters, like to brand the Quebec City demonstrators as "hooligans." That is not fair. I talked to dozens of them, mostly university students, aged about 20. They came to Quebec, not to have "a good time," as some suggest, but to express their well-thought-out views on a subject that is important to them, to all of us. I may not have agreed with their position, but I sure believe in their right to express it. The police had no cause to violently suppress it. Some will say that a handful of demonstrators got out of hand and forced the police to take collective action. I can't agree. The police action in Quebec City, under orders from our government, was a provocation itself -- an assault on all our freedoms. Sinclair Stevens, minister of regional industrial expansion under Brian Mulroney, was an MP from 1972 to 1988. ------------------------------ End of Cdn-Firearms Digest V3 #745 ********************************** Submissions: mailto:cdn-firearms-digest@sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca Mailing List Commands: mailto:majordomo@sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca Moderator's e-mail address: mailto:acardin33@home.com List owner: mailto:owner-cdn-firearms@sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca FAQ list: http://www.magma.ca/~asd/cfd-faq1.html and http://teapot.usask.ca/cdn-firearms/Faq/cfd-faq1.html Web Site: http://teapot.usask.ca/cdn-firearms/homepage.html FTP Site: ftp://teapot.usask.ca/pub/cdn-firearms/ CFDigest Archives: http://www.sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca/~ab133/ or put the next command in an e-mail message and mailto:majordomo@sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca get cdn-firearms-digest v03.n198 end (198 is the digest issue number and 03 is the volume) To unsubscribe from _all_ the lists, put the next five lines in a message and mailto:majordomo@sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca unsubscribe cdn-firearms-digest unsubscribe cdn-firearms-alert unsubscribe cdn-firearms-chat unsubscribe cdn-firearms end (To subscribe, use "subscribe" instead of "unsubscribe".)
