For your paper to call it a wild distortion of facts (Letters, Nov, 21.) without any mention of credible evidence to the contrary is shameful." should read "Bowling for Columbine - Documentary or Fiction?", by David T Hardy, which can be seen in its entirety at http://www.hardylaw.net/Truth_About_Bowling.html - and then attempt to find any "credible evidence" to back up Moore's claims. The article opens with: "Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" won the Oscar for best documentary. Unfortunately, it is not a documentary, by the Academy's own definition. "The injustice here is not so much to the viewer, as to the independent producers of real documentaries. These struggle in a field which receives but a fraction of the recognition and financing of the "entertainment industry." They are protected by Academy rules limiting the documentary competition to nonfiction. "Bowling is fiction. It makes its points by deceiving and by misleading the viewer. Statements are made which are false. Moore leads the reader to draw inferences which he must have known were wrong. Indeed, even speeches shown on screen are heavily edited, so that sentences are assembled in the speaker's voice, but which were not sentences he uttered. Bowling uses deception as its primary tool of persuasion and effect. "A film which does this may be a commercial success. It may be entertaining. But it is not a documentary. One need only consult Rule 12 of the rules for the Academy Award: a documentary is a non-fictional movie. "The point is not that Bowling is biased. No, the point is that Bowling is deliberately, seriously, and consistently deceptive." The article then proceeds to clinically dissect Moore's lies, fabrications, and deceptions and includes dozens of links to aid the reader in continuing his/her further research. They've failed to show up at every show/meeting they claimed they'd be at for a long time now - seems to me they're batting a thousand. I have missed you, and Budster too. Hope things with that Japanese fellow resolve themselves soon. All governments are frightened by the exponential growth of health care spending and justifiably so. Health Care workers from nurses and every other organized group have managed to wring significant wage hikes which, I recall, have taken up most of the budget growth in the past few years. Thus equipment and staffing level and programing may not be budgeted for at this point. So the pressure to reduce costs where they can and with who have less clout than the unionized or professionals is where that naturally falls. I'd expect that comes from both deputy minister, executive council and the Ministry of Finance. If you'd wish to see what benefit your position might bring I'd suggest obtaining copies of the Fyke Report and the more recent Romanow Report. That should give you the lay of the health politics land. Should you display a better grasp of the issues there is no reason why you might not be able to wrangle a renumerated position. Mills SOURCE: National Post - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- Big gun registry lie - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- Re: Gun Registry, letter to the editor, Dec. 5. Once again, Solicitor General Wayne Easter tries to pull the wool over the eyes of Canadian citizens by attempting to distract them with fluff and nonsense, and not substance. His claims that spending is under control, and that the system is being streamlined and made more efficient are meaningless. He tries to mislead us by claiming that the Firearms Act established background checks for license holders and proper handling of firearms. These were already required under previous legislation. The formation of the National Weapons Enforcement Support Team could have been accomplished without passing new legislation. The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police are nothing more than a registered lobby group, who have a vested interest in garnering more money and more power for themselves -- which will always come at the expense of our rights. Mr. Easter tries to make the gun registry look like it's doing something by claiming that it is used 13,000 times a week, or 1,900 times a day. What kind of results are we getting for this incredible amount of use? How many firearms have been seized from those who should not have them? How many licenses have been revoked? How many charges have been laid? How many prohibition orders have been placed? We will never know, because the Canadian Firearms Centre doesn't keep those kinds of records. Without some kind of concrete results, this amounts to nothing more than bureaucratic busywork. The biggest lie of all is that this billion dollar fiasco will in any way make Canada "safer." In fact, "public safety" has nothing to do with it at all. It is simply the means to the Liberal government's agenda of eventually eliminating all private ownership of firearms -- period. Bruce N. Federal Auditor General Sheila Fraser predicted the gun registry's bill to taxpayers would reach more than $1 billion by 2005. Now, it appears that mark will be hit a year earlier, according to new expense numbers contained in government estimates. The firearms registry has been an abysmal failure, racking up unacceptable cost overruns, targeting law-abiding gun owners and failing to provide any convincing evidence of a significant decrease in crime. The cost to Canadian taxpayers and individual gun owners cannot be justified by Ottawa any longer. After he's sworn in as Canada's next prime minister, one of Paul Martin's priorities should be shutting down the ineffective and wasteful gun registry as quickly as possible. Even ammunition. City cops plan to spend $630,000 on bullets in the next year, and that has some wondering if they're turning gold into lead. "That's outrageous," said frequent cop critic Marshall Deslauriers. "This is not a war zone." But police say it's not that hard to follow the dollars: About 1,200 officers have to qualify twice a year for handgun proficiency. That means firing at least 400 rounds each year through their ..40-calibre Glock handguns. And, hundreds of patrol officers and some detectives have to qualify annually for shotgun proficiency rating. Finally, nearly 100 police officers have to qualify for rifle use as well. Shotgun shells cost roughly $1 each. Publicly available .40-calibre bullets cost roughly $20 per 50. "We do use different rounds for practice and street use," said Sgt. Chris Hayden. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Dec 2003 08:02:16 -0600 (CST) From: Robert LaCasse Subject: GunGrab Sentencing! Number 1 Canada Our northern neighbor shares the longest undefended border in the world, but the enemies on September 11, 2001 used it to enter our nation. Since 1867 when Canada became an independent nation, the United States and Canada have shared a strong relationship including military support. As Canada's liberal government continues to widen the gap that has formed between our nations over the last ten years with policies such as gay marriage, unlimited immigration, decriminalized marijuana, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, many of us on both sides of the border wonder what went wrong, and how we can fix the problem. The problems with American-Canadian relations will not be solved until Canada realizes how grateful it should be in regards to the United States. If the United States ignored Canada, Canada would be defenseless and its economy would collapse because Canada would lose its biggest trading partner. Further, a majority of Canadians have grown to look down on the military, and this is clear in the current strength of the Canadian armed forces. If twenty thousand Chinese troops landed in Canada tomorrow, the United States military would have to kick them out of the nation. Lastly, if you want to understand what is wrong with the current ideals of the Democrat Party in the United States just look north to Canada, which has become the home of extreme leftist policy. Number 2 France I was not surprised when France failed to support the liberation of the Iraqi people from the grips of Saddam Hussein. The French have had a problem with the United States since the 1960's because France has a hard time recognizing its role in the world. France was the center of the western world for almost three hundred years until World War Two when its was ravaged by the Nazi occupation. Anglo-American forces liberated France from the grips of Nazism as we have liberated Iraq from the grips of a madman this spring. As my history teacher states, "France is mad at the United States because it stole its center." The United States has eclipsed the nation that helped to free it from the British, but the French are having a hard time accepting their new role in the world. But the thing that angers me the most about France was the fact that they were cutting arms deals with Hussein a few months before the war. Clearly the French did not have an ounce of concern for allied forces patrolling the No-Fly Zones before the war, and the troops that entered Iraq when the liberation began. How could a nation forget how the United States liberated them from evil, but bow to evil when another people needed liberated from a madman? Number 3 Germany Around sixty thousand American airman and solders are currently based in the Federal Republic of Germany. The United States has maintained a sizable force in Germany since World War Two defending it from the threat posed by the Soviet Bloc, but since this enemy has disappeared why are two heavy divisions still forward based in Germany? The United States after World War Two helped rebuild Germany into one of the most economically powerful nations in the world, but many Germans have grown to dislike the United States. The thing that shocks me the most is the belief among a sizable portion of the German public that September 11 attacks were carried out by Zionist conspirators within the American and Israeli governments who want to rule the Middle East by force. I believe personally that Germany as a whole is jealous of the United States and its global power, and many Germans see this as a threat to the European state that they are trying to create. Number 4 Mexico Our southern neighbor to the south has totally ignored our sovereignty by encouraging its citizens to cross our border illegally. Further, the Mexican government has not done enough to prevent the flow of illicit drugs between their nation and our nation. Al-Qaida members have tried to enter the United States through Mexico. Other than these failures to respect the sovereignty, Mexico has not supported the Global War on Terrorism, and has failed to provide even moral support the United States. Many in Mexico remain sour over the Mexican War and the following Mexican Cession, and this leads to a general dislike of the United States. Maybe if Mexico remains sour, we should become sour on trade issues. Number 5 South Korea For almost fifty years, South Koreans have welcomed American forces in their nation to help defend their nation from the threat posed by their "evil twin", North Korea. Now a new generation of South Koreans have came to power who want to negotiate a solution to the dispute, and generally dislike the United States, and see it as the cause of its problems with North Korea. Older South Koreans are highly thankful for the United States, but as more and more younger South Koreans come to power the relationship will likely face increasing roadblocks. The citizens of South Koreans do have a chance to stop this progressively downward slopping relationship if they agree to send forces to Iraq to help in reconstruction and stabilizing the nation. If this does not take place, thousands of American troops will likely be redeployed to other areas of the Asian-Pacific Theater, hurting the South Korean economy. The five nations above all have drifted away from their traditional support for the United States over the last ten years. All of these nations have relied on the American economy for years, but have forgotten what keeps the engine that helps them free and prosperous. I as many Americans are ready to forget what has happened between our nations if they would remember the past and what makes their nations viable and free.
