On one hand, they're depicted as the Baby Hughies of nature: hulking, good-natured dullards that sometimes haplessly cross paths with humans. And what child hasn't sought comfort by curling up with their favourite teddy bear? And when a bear attacks someone, as was the case this week in Canmore, the public reels in shock, as if somehow the animal has committed some unimaginable betrayal. On the other hand, there are the rarer instances when bears are portrayed as malevolent, human-hating killers. Case in point: the Alec Baldwin/Tony Hopkins movie The Edge, where they play hapless city slickers lost in the wilds of Alaska, fumbling to stay ahead of the grizzly that's relentlessly stalking them. The truth about bears, of course, lies somewhere in-between. I spent seven years living in prime bear habitat and I've been very up-close and personal with several black bears. What I learned was, bears are neither cuddly nor evil. They are animals, period. They serve a very specific function in their ecosystem and are only a threat when humans fail to respect that. The remote area that I lived in was gradually becoming populated. Roads were cut through bush. Logging operations chewed up vast tracts of wilderness. Bears, deer and other large animals in the area were having a tougher and tougher time finding the forage they live on during the summer. Meanwhile, the growing human population was producing ever-more tempting garbage, and many of the lazier, less responsible inhabitants dumped it in the woods. Many of the new residents acted as if they were still in suburbia, planting ornamental fruit trees and other water-intensive shrubbery in their yards. Many were outraged when wildlife wandered onto their property and ate their plants and devoured the contents of their bird feeders. The worst time was autumn, when animals began to gorge themselves to store up fat for the winter. Bears, following this biological imperative, became increasingly bold. Like many of my neighbours, I had to learn the hard way that we were interfering with their lifestyles, not the other way around. I made the unfortunate decision to keep chickens. In bear country. Hey, I'm not proud of it, OK? One fall day, while working in the yard with my youngest daughter, I heard a terrible commotion at the chicken coop. When I got there I found a 200-pound juvenile bear sitting in the middle of the run, covered in blood and feathers. He looked at me, let out a bawl and shot over the fence. I chased him, hurling rocks and shouting as loudly and aggressively as I could. He disappeared into the trees and I went about cleaning up the carnage. After a few hours, the surviving chickens ventured outside again, and in short order the bear was back at the buffet. This time he didn't run from my noise and rocks. He sauntered. Later that night, I went out one more time to check on the few surviving chickens, and found, to my horror, that bear had gotten right inside the coop. He couldn't find his way out and was rocking the entire structure back and forth in panic. I called a neighbour, who came over with his rifle and dispatched the bear. The conservation officer who came to take away the carcass looked at the chicken coop, looked at the bear and then looked at me. He shook his head without saying a word. That bear died because I didn't understand. It could just as easily have been me that was being carted away. Nature is not evil. It is not inconsistent, either. We must respect and understand it, or pay the price. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 09:51:10 -0600 (CST) From: "Bruce Mills" Subject: My letter to the Lethbridge Herald Just submitted, not yet printed. Where are the charges of careless use of a firearm, for firing four bullets out of the Alberta Fish and Game Association firing range? If that had been done by some Joe Gunowner, he would have been arrested at gunpoint, handcuffed, strip searched, perp walked and locked in a cell for a week awaiting bail. All his firearms would be confiscated, his license revoked, and he would be placed under a firearms prohibition by the courts. Then he would have to spend he hard-earned money to defend himself in court. But if you're a cop, all you have to say is "Ooops - my bad!" and you're off the hook! There isn't even any mention of any disciplinary action against the officer who fired the shots! Outrageous! Further to that, why should there have to be an "decision" made by the city council to reopen the range? It was clearly the fault of the police, not that of the range, in either design or operation. They've already been closed for 3 months, to the deteriment of the Alberta Fish and Game Association and its members. This is just another example of the treatment that all law-abiding gun owners are subjected to by all levels of government. Southern Alberta police force apologizes for stray bullet Dear Sir/Madame, The S.A. police have taken responsibility for the rounds which left the range and struck a residential dwelling, and for that they are to be commended. The unfortunate result was the closure of a civilian range, but the damage might have been much much worse had someone been injured. As a qualified civilian range officer and avid handgun competitor, I have some knowledge of course and exercise design, and the cardinal rule before one allows a shot to be fired over the scenario is to "check your angles". This will vary by the position of the shooter, as well as his or her stature, and all variations must be considered carefully *before* any shots are fired. As civilians, we are held to a higher standard than are police, as if we were ever to screw up in such a manner, we would get much more than a reprimand and be forced to apologize. That no-one was injured is a blessing. I hope in future the firearms instructor will take the time to check his scenario design, and I might suggest obtaining one of those little laser pointers at the dollar store for the purpose ... they come in real handy! As for the council's decision, I hope that they will reconsider the range closure and everyone involved will have learned a valuable lesson about firearms safety! Sincerely, Robert S. Watch this police video ASAP, before it is taken down from the Internet. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/content/news/video/taser_ video4.html (or http://tinyurl.com/apekj ) The police video shows the stop and arrest of a woman driver in Florida. She was stopped for speeding and having a brake light not functioning. She protested the stop and asked for the officer's name and unit number. The officer delayed answering her questions and belittled them. The officer later expanded his grounds for stopping the woman to include having a broken windshield and her not wearing a seat belt. Note: the woman committed no violent act and had not endangered anyone up to the time of the stop. The officer told the woman to stay in the car while he radioed for information. The officer apparently learned via the radio that the woman's driver's license was suspended. The woman started to call a contact person on her cell phone, but the officer returned to her car and told her to put the phone down and get out of the car. The officer was preparing to arrest the woman for driving on a suspended license. The officer did not know whom the woman was calling, but the officer did not allow the woman to complete her telephone conversation. The woman did not want to exit the vehicle until she finished with the telephone call. The officer did not wait any time at all before ordering the woman out, and when she delayed and protested, he threatened several times and then deployed the Taser device against her once or twice. Getting Tasered means having two metal darts shot into your body, and then having 50,000 volts zapped into you via the wires connected to the darts. Note well: the woman was arrested because of a paperwork violation, not because she had committed any crime that endangered or harmed anyone. The woman was Tasered because she did not immediately obey the officer's commands, and because she resisted the officer's taking the phone out of her hands and his trying to extract her from the car. Was this arrest proper? Did the officer use the appropriate amount of force? The legal answers are for a judge and jury. For gun owners, the message is clear. This video shows one real way that "gun control" laws will be enforced against you. As registration and licensing and other so-called reasonable "gun control" laws are enacted, your risk of breaking those laws increases. A paperwork violation will be enforced; the enforcers will use batons, Tasers, pepper spray, or sidearms to take you down and bring you in. Watch the video, especially segment 3. Ask yourself what you would do when they come for you or someone you love -- on account of a gun law paperwork violation. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/content/news/video/taser_ video4.html If you don't like the prospect of forcible arrest for a paperwork violation, then you need to help us turn Americans against "gun control" at every level. We have the educational tools to help: books and booklets for all ages, fiction and non-fiction, articles and essays and videos. Get some tools and go to work. You can't quote the Second Amendment while you're jerking and writhing at the business end of a Taser. This place actually has a nice ammo section, and is the only store close buy that carries CCI .22 LR Minimags and Velocitors, that just happen to shoot great out of my bolt action Marlin. Getting ready for a weekend of plinking and groundhog harassment, I asked the sporting goods clerk ( who looked not much more than 12 years old) for the ammo. After explaining what I wanted and pointing to its location about 40 times, I then cheerfully went around the counter and got the boxes myself. He didn't know how to fill out the ammo sales book. As a matter of fact, he didn't even know there WAS an ammo sales book. I found that for him too under the counter. He didn't know how to fill it out, so I gave him a crash course on that, too. I noticed that my name was just about the only one in the book for the last 20 entries or so, which explained how I knew where everything was and he didn't. I brought said ammo up to the front cash, as the above mentioned clerk didn't know how to get into his cash register, either. Just about this time, I was beginning to come to the realization that the clerk didn't know much of ANYTHING. Anyhow, the front cashier was a large, uh, minority woman with a cheerful, grandma like look to her. She picked up one of the boxes of ammunition, and asked, "What's this?" "Ammunition," I replied guardedly, "for a .22" Her face screwed up in a look of shock. "You mean, like BULLETS for a GUN?" "Well, sort of..." She looked at the box in disgust, and continued, "For KILLING?" I stood dumbfounded for a second or two, but since it was early in the morning and nobody else was around to hear the conversation, I decided to have a little fun. I acted incredulous. "For killing? Heavens no! I use those for something else entirely." "Like what?" She asked. "Stool softeners." "Stool softeners? What's that?" "You know," I leaned over and whispered, acted as embarrassed as I could, "Suppositories." "Really?" she asked. "Oh, yes." I said, taking the box from her hand and showing her. "The best kept secret in town; twenty-twos, especially these here Velocitors, are better than anything you can get in the pharmacy. Clears up the old constipation in two shakes of a cat's tail." She seemed genuinely interested, and adjusted her glasses in order to get a better look. "The reason it works so well," I continued, is because of THIS." I pointed at one of the bullets. "What?" "The hollow point!" I was seriously having fun now, and rambled on. "The hollow point causes what's called hydrostatic shock. See?" She gave that 'I'm-looking-and-pretending-to-see-what-you're-telling-me-but-actually-d on't-look.' "Do they really work?" She asked, astounded. Oh my god, this one was about as bright as the first clerk, only not as pimply. "Sure they do." I said, taking my purchase and slipping it into a bag. "You've just got to be careful for gas, that's all." "What do you mean?" "You know, GAS..." I said, leaning over and whispering again. "You got to be real careful that you don't have a lot of gas when you take one of these. Happened to me once," I continued, "took one of these, let one rip(farting noise) and bang! Shot my dog dead. Put a hole in the wife's ironing board, too." I left her standing there with her jaw slack and eyes wide open as I literally ran out of the store and just about got a hernia from laughing so hard. The moral of the story is, you can have a lot of fun with stupid people! (And Wal-Mart's full of them!)
