Police were called to the area around Victoria Avenue and Charles Street around 5:45 p.m. Sgt. Brad Lentini said a neighbourhood resident called police to report three or four suspicious male youths in their late teens were walking in the area while "carrying firearms." "They'd been walking eastbound and then sort of disappeared in that area," said Lentini. Four police cruisers were dispatched and searched the area, but neither the teens nor the guns were found. "We did everything we could do, and we've had no other calls on it," Lentini said around 10 p.m. He added it may have been a case of people carrying toy or replica guns in public - something he said is "not a smart thing to do." Just last Friday, he said, young people at Quinte Secondary School were cautioned about the dangers of carrying cap guns in public. Last month, police reported a woman used a replica handgun to rob a North Front Street pizza restaurant. Officers described another man as "lucky to be alive" after he pulled a fake gun from his pants and pointed it at an officer on Front Street. Police also received another report of teens carrying what appeared to have been replica guns near a high school. Lentini said the public should notify police if they spot anyone carrying what appears to be a weapon, even if it turns out to be fake. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 13:48:17 -0600 (CST) From: owner-cdn-firearms@sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca (Majordomo User) Subject: Shooting victim not talking PUBLICATION: The Chronicle-Herald DATE: 2006.06.27 SECTION: NovaScotia PAGE: B3 WORD COUNT: 165 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shooting victim not talking - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 51-year-old victim of a shooting Saturday in Spryfield is not talking, police say. Police received a report at about 10 p.m. Saturday night that someone had been shot earlier in the evening in the 500 block of Herring Cove Road. They found the victim at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, where he was being treated for a non-life-threatening leg wound. Investigators tried to interview the man, but he would not co-operate. A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the shooting but was released without being charged. He was arrested at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, when several police cars pulled over a silver minivan on the Herring Cove Road. Police say the shooting is not believed to be related to the double shooting in Beechville a week ago. Wayne Nicholas Marriott, 21, was gunned down outside his home at 25 Sheppards Run. Jeremy Alvin LeBlanc, 24, was also shot at that time. He survived. Police have said they believe there are two suspects in last week's shootings. They have appealed to the public for help tracking down James Bernard Melvin, 24, who they say is armed and dangerous. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 13:48:17 -0600 (CST) From: owner-cdn-firearms@sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca (Majordomo User) Subject: CBC Radio - In New York, a coalition of anti-gun activists PUBLICATION: CBC Radio - World Report DATE: 2006.06.26 TIME: 8:00 EDT WORD COUNT: 99 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [In New York, a coalition of anti-gun activists is urging delegates to a U-N conference on small arms, to negotiate a new treaty, regulating the transfer and sale of conventional weapons. Prisoners at the Max have been in lockdown since about 10 p.m. Friday, after prison staff heard reports that a mysterious figure spotted lurking outside the institution's walls Thursday may have thrown some contraband over the outer wall. Kevin Grabowsky, Prairie region president of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, said Sunday that new information suggests a handgun was thrown into the prison yard. But Jim MacKenzie, acting assistant warden at the Edmonton Institution, said that while reports suggest a weapon is hidden in the prison, they aren't certain. "We've got intelligence that it could be a weapon," he said. "It will be a number of days before we potentially come off lockdown." Meanwhile, foul play is not suspected in the death of a 42-year-old Edmonton Institution inmate who died in hospital Friday. The cause of death of Reginald Dale Gogerla is pending, said the medical examiner, who is awaiting toxicology results. Gogerla had arrived at the maximum-security jail just three days before his death Friday to serve a two-year, three-month stretch. He was convicted of causing a disturbance, dangerous driving, theft over $5,000, hit and run, failure to remain at the scene of a crime, disqualified driving, failure to hold a valid operator's licence and failure to appear. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 13:48:18 -0600 (CST) From: owner-cdn-firearms@sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca (Majordomo User) Subject: Gun amnesty now under way PUBLICATION: The Daily News (Halifax) DATE: 2006.06.27 SECTION: Local News PAGE: 10 BYLINE: WORD COUNT: 88 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Gun amnesty now under way - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From June 26 to July 24, HRM residents will have the opportunity to turn over unregistered and unwanted guns to the authorities. The first wild bear to be seen in Germany since 1835 was shot by government-sanctioned hunters in an Alpine meadow in the early morning, putting an end to a sometimes humorous saga that has made headlines around Europe, even in competition with the World Cup. Bruno was part of a project to re-introduce bears to northern Italy, but he roamed into Austria and Germany. In recent weeks he regularly popped out of the woods to make brief but brazen appearances -- on one occasion, plunking down for a rest in front of a police station in the Bavarian lakeside resort of Kochel am See. But a pack of crack Finnish tracking dogs was sent home in defeat after failing to corner him so he could be tranquillized and sent home. The shooting brought immediate condemnation from environmental groups and some politicians, and Bavarian Environment Minister Werner Schnappauf -- who gave permission for the bear to be killed -- received death threats. The two-year-old bear had dined on sheep, killed rabbits and broken into beehives. Officials said it was only a matter of time before the 100-kilogram Bruno attacked a human. "There was no other solution," Anton Steixner, an official from the Austrian state of Tyrol, told reporters. "Even animal rights activists should understand that this bear killed sheep and tore into rabbits purely for pleasure," Steixner said. "Rabbits are also deserving of sympathy." But Tony Scherer, mayor of Schliersee, the Bavarian town near Spitzingsee lake, where Bruno was killed, disagreed. "The death penalty has been abolished," said Scherer. "This bear didn't do anything bad -- for me it is absolutely unnecessary for him to have been shot." Bruno was killed instantly by a single shot from 150 metres, officials said. They would not identify the three hunters involved in the 4:50 a.m. shooting, citing possible threats from animal lovers. The bear was spotted in Bavaria in May. DNA samples from hair he left behind were used to identify him as JJ1, part of the project in Italy. Bavarian authorities gave permission for hunters to kill the bear, then backed down in the face of the ensuing outcry and decided to try to capture him. But the bear kept ahead of his pursuers. On the weekend, Bavarian officials said they would reinstate permission for hunters to shoot the bear on Tuesday. After the bear was killed on Monday, however, they said informal permission had been granted starting Saturday. The head of the German Animal Protection Federation said his organization was considering legal action. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 14:00:35 -0600 (CST) From: Rob Sciuk Subject: The Swiss think tank which makes this stuff up ... "One of the first things we would do is scrap Bill C-68." The legislation introduced by Stockwell Day is hardly that. It doesn't even remove the registration of long guns, it merely removes the requirement for the gun owner to have a piece of paper. The proposed legislation continues registration in a "back-door" fashion, all the while requiring gun owners get "permission" from "daddy government" before we can buy or sell long guns. C-21 continues the charade that we will magically reduce violent crime by keeping track of the law-abiding citizens of Canada. What utter garbage! It is NOT a "good first step" as the so-called "pro-gun organizations" sputter uselessly. It is an affront to every law-abiding gun owner that has fought for the past ten years to rid Ottawa of the Liberals, their useless programs and endless corruption. If this is what Stockwell Day considers a "promise kept" to the people who have fought to elect him for the past ten years, we gun owners are in much bigger trouble than even I imagined. - --30-- Christopher di Armani P.O. It sounds like something you'd see in a Hollywood movie. But it actually took place at 11am Tuesday near Yonge and Grosvenor Sts. Cops were called to the downtown core after receiving reports a woman was wandering around the area brandishing a gun. After a brief search, they found her and with hearts pounding, they approached her at a full gallop with their weapons unholstered. Screaming 'drop it' and 'Police! Stop!' the cops landed on the woman, who seemed confused by their sudden appearance. As they struggled with her on the ground and handcuffed their reluctant prisoner, police also found the gun, which turned out to be a silver-coloured replica pistol made out of plastic. There's no word on why she was carrying it, but cops took the surprised suspect into custody and have been questioning her. So far, she hasn't been charged with anything. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 17:34:02 -0600 (CST) From: wrpa Subject: Re: Defeatism >wrpa wrote: >>>The problem today is that the masses have been brainwashed to accept >>>licencing as if it were the norm? ...well it ISNT.. the norm is to be >>>free and do what you will but harm no-one in the process. >>>ed/ontario >> >> You should understand the words you use. In case you missed that announcement and the details of it, please visit www.BruceMontague.ca and download the full document. The Crown canceled this month's scheduled judicial pre-trial without giving a reason. Our trial is still scheduled to begin September 25, 2006. It's now over two years since Bruce was first charged and we are, of course, eager to place our case before the courts. We have many strong arguments on our side, and are hopeful the Crown prosecutors will not further delay our day in court. With the introduction of Bill C-21, the Conservative government is saying it is "scrapping the registry". Some think that claim means something specific to the Bruce Montague case. It does not. Gun Registration is merely the red flag the Liberals waved at gun owners to distract everyone from the REAL issue of LICENSING. This is what violates our rights, NOT registration. The licensing deadline was first for that very reason. By holding up the red flag of registration and waving it madly at us, we fell for the trap and the licensing deadline passed without so much as a whimper from us. The time has come for Canada to focus our resources upon violent criminals, NOT law-abiding citizens. Why are we fighting so hard to have the Firearms Act (Bill C-68) struck down? Because it violates our rights in direct and intentional contravention of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms in the following areas: 1) Right to privacy 2) Right to procedural fairness 3) Right against unreasonable search and seizure 4) Right to property 5) Right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty 6) Right to own arms Most people do not see the threat of licensing, yet this is at the core of our stand against the Firearms Act. Bill C-68 turned the mere possession of a firearm into a crime. Sections 91 and 92 criminalize firearm possession. The DEFENSE against that crime is the Possession and Acquisition License (PAL). This is the MAJOR difference between the prior FAC and the new PAL. Under the prior system, owning a firearm was NOT a crime. The Firearms Acquisition Certificate was ONLY required for the purchase of firearms, NOT their possession. It is Licensing, NOT registration, that will destroy our way of life. Registration is merely paperwork to keep bureaucrats busy and distract us from the real issue. Licensing attempts to turn our RIGHT to posses firearms into a mere privilege. A privilege the Minister of Public Safety can wipte out with the stroke of a pen, with NO ACCOUNTABILITY to the courts, to parliament, or to us, the people of this country. The Canadian Government is flagrantly violating our constitution. It is our right to own firearms that we are fighting for. That is what this charter challenge is all about. With the introduction of C-21, the government would have us believe we have won because the "Gun Registry" is gone. - - DON'T BE DUPED! - - - C-21 STILL requires us to have a license to merely own our private property. That is NO victory. We must pressure our MP's into keeping their word. We must pressure our MP's to repeal the ENTIRE Firearms Act, just like they promised. Let's not be content with this token gesture. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is clear, despite our government's insistence it is not. We must continue to fight for our rights at all levels: both politically and legally. Bruce's battle, indeed OUR battle, is in the courts. I urge you to support this battle in any way possible. I also urge you to work on your local MP and explain to him why Bill C-21 is an affront to law-abiding gun owners, NOT a solution.
