Fulbright http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,336837,00.html You can practically set your watch by it. Seems like every couple of weeks, some once-powerful, now-embattled politician has gotten himself into a royal scandal. And when it involves sex, it's even more salacious. Most of us can't fathom how any man would be willing to risk giving up a perfectly good political gig, let alone his marriage, family, reputation, etc., for a romp with a hooker. So why do men in high-power positions take such a chance? When I first heard about the Eliot Spitzer scandal, I immediately wondered what's not going on in Spitzer's marital bed. After all, when your average married man goes to a prostitute, it's often because he's sexually dissatisfied or sexually deviant. ... But Gov. Spitzer is no ordinary man. Regarded as an egomaniac by many, this guy has been known to shake things up, to challenge the status quo and to follow a bolder vision. Interestingly enough, all of these are indicators of a man with lowered inhibitions. Why does that matter? Research shows that people consumed with power experience an adrenaline rush. This helps to explain why some people are willing to push the envelope - and why someone like Spitzer may have been unable to control himself. Complicating matters even more is the fact that people with power are: - - Overly optimistic; - - Likelier to take risks; - - More likely to pursue their own personal needs for satisfaction. It is no wonder, then, that many become overly confident when it comes to taking risks. They're more optimistic about their odds for success. Furthermore, they underestimate the dangers. They think they're above the law. They're confident that they won't get caught. As Henry Kissinger once said, "Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac." When people become "drunk with power," they feel untouchable, unstoppable, and all-powerful. This experience is enhanced by the fact that others react more deferentially to those with power. But this does not go both ways. When it comes to relating to other people, powerful persons have proven themselves worse at judging others' reactions than your average Joe. Research has further found them less able to accurately read others' verbal and facial cues. They also tend to be oblivious to what others think, and more likely to misjudge the impression they're making on others. With this, we can start to comprehend why the powerful aren't too worried about what the rest of us think about anything, including their "quality" time with call girls. On one final note, another thing to consider is that people who are naturally selfish become even more so with power. Power changes people. This is why many inevitably fall from grace. Eliot Spitzer said on Tuesday that he will resign effective Monday after being linked to a prostitution ring. The resignation will not be effective until then at the request of Lt. Gov. David Paterson, who needs time to put a transition team in place. Paterson will become the governor of New York when he is publicly sworn in on Monday. Paterson will become just the eighth black governor in American history, the first in New York. http://www.wnbc.com/politics/15572975/detail.html Spitzer is expected to formally announce his resignation at 11:30 a.m. Watch Live Coverage (NOW). http://www.wnbc.com/videostream/13298034/detail.html Spitzer's resignation will not become final until he informs top-ranking officials and submits an official letter. WNBC.com has been told to expect a paper statement e-mailed out and posted on the state's official Web site. New York State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, speaking at a news conference Wednesday, said he felt "sad" for Spitzer and his family but stressed that the state needs to focus on the future. "He must deal with his own problems in his own way, but it is time for us and all new Yorkers to move forward," said Bruno. Bruno and Spitzer have an acrimonious history, as Spitzer had been embroiled in an earlier scandal in which his aides were accused of overzealously searching for incriminating information about the majority leader. Bruno also said he was looking forward to working with Paterson. "We are going to partner with the lieutenant governor when he becomes governor," said Bruno. "David has always been very open with me, very forthright ... I look forward to a positive, productive relationship." The new developments of Spitzer's impending resignation come amid allegations that Spitzer spent tens of thousands of dollars as a client of a high-end prostitution ring. Meantime, staff in the office off Republican majority senate leader Joseph Bruno said they have not yet heard from Spitzer. Sources said Spitzer has been holed-up in his Upper East Side home with his lawyers, also trying to hammer out a deal to help him avoid criminal prosecution. Even if he resigns from office, more New York state voters think he should face criminal prosecution for his actions than those who think he should not, according to a WNBC/Marist poll released on Tuesday. According to the poll, 49 percent of registered voters said they think Spitzer should face criminal charges for his role as a customer of the Emperors Club VIP escort service. Sixty-four percent of Republican voters said they think the governor should be charged with a crime, but only 39 percent of Democrat respondents said they believe he should be charged. During an alleged meeting with a prostitute, the Democratic governor used the alias "George Fox," a source said. His alleged conversations with the prostitution ring are detailed in court papers in which Spitzer is identified as "Client 9," according to a source. The case started when banks noticed the frequent cash transfers from several accounts and filed suspicious activity reports with the Internal Revenue Service, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press Tuesday. The accounts were traced back to Spitzer, prompting public corruption investigators to open an inquiry. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. The inquiry found that Spitzer was a repeat customer with the Emperors Club VIP, a high-end prostitution service, the official said. In an affidavit filed in Manhattan federal court last week, Spitzer appeared as "Client 9," according to another law enforcement official who also spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation. Spitzer allegedly paid for the call girl to take a train from New York to Washington -- a move that opened the transaction up to federal prosecution because she crossed state lines. The governor has not been charged, and prosecutors would not comment on the case. A Spitzer spokesman said the governor has retained a large Manhattan law firm. Client 9 wanted a high-priced prostitute named Kristen to come to Washington on a 5:39 p.m. train from Manhattan Feb. 13. The door to the hotel room would be left ajar. Train tickets, cab fare, room service, and the minibar were all on him. "Yup, same as in the past. No question about it," the caller told Kristen's boss, when asked if he would make his payment to the same business as usual, a federal affidavit said. The client paid $4,300 to Kristen, touted by the escort service as a "petite, pretty brunette," according to the court papers. The tryst took place in the Mayflower hotel, where Spitzer rented a second room for the woman under another name, the law enforcement official who spoke to the AP on Tuesday said. Spitzer had to sneak past his state police detail to get to her room, the official said. Spitzer, a 48-year-old father of three teenage girls, was elected with a historic margin of victory, and took office Jan. 1, 2007, vowing to stamp out corruption in New York government in the same way that he took on Wall Street executives as state attorney general. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2008 12:19:57 -0400 From: rae baker Subject: Shootings Optimistic view If we just sit and wait the shootings will still go on. Declaring that "enough is enough," participants in the 2008 edition of Illinois Gun Owners Lobby Day (IGOLD) spent the better part of Tuesday afternoon lobbying legislators to vote against measures that would ban popular sporting firearms; impose costly new regulations on ammunition manufacturers; ration firearm purchases; and impose unattainable training requirements for persons wishing to own firearms. The day's events began with an information and education session in the Grand Ballroom of the Springfield Hilton followed by an enthusiastic march down Capitol Drive which ended with a rally on the Capitol's Lincoln Steps. From there, participants fanned out to begin their individual lobbying efforts. Organizers place Tuesday's attendance figures at over 2,500 -- better than double the 2007 numbers. "What we saw Tuesday was a giant push back," commented ISRA Executive Director, Richard Pearson. "The thousands who attended IGOLD represent millions of Illinoisans who are fed up with the gun control bloc's capricious efforts to destroy the shooting sports and deny the law-abiding citizen's right to self defense." "The gun control movement has sought to divide our country -- a tactic that is not working to their advantage," continued Pearson. "I'm seeing a growing level of political sophistication in our supporters. They're taking a more holistic view of the legislative process. As we progress, our people will begin linking gun control to other issues facing the General Assembly. Thus, it shouldn't be surprising to find gun owners mounting organized efforts to defeat pet projects of Chicago area legislators. Daley and his friends are trying to destroy our most deeply honored traditions, so it's more than reasonable for us to strike back." "It would be wise for legislators to do the math," concluded Pearson. "Recent national poll results show that better than 75% of Americans believe that gun ownership is an individual right. On Tuesday, we put 2,500 people at the front door to the Capitol calling for change. I've never seen the gun control movement accomplish anything near that." The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful and responsible firearms ownership. For more than a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of over 1.5 million law-abiding firearm owners.
