Twisted cleric jailed 4 years By SAM PAZZANO, COURTS BUREAU > http://www.torontosun.com/News/TorontoAndGTA/2008/03/27/5116916-sun.html A pastor who impregnated a woman he terrorized into a sexual relationship by threatening curses was sentenced yesterday to four years in prison. "He intentionally had unprotected sex with her because as he said to her, 'My seed cannot be wasted.' The judge sentenced Lawrence for sexual acts ranging from fondling to five to 10 incidents of intercourse. The woman, now 29, gave birth to Lawrence's daughter in August 2004. The victim filed for support in Family Court and, in September 2005 after receiving a "threatening phone call from Lawrence," phoned police, said Belobaba. Court documents revealed Lawrence fathered and financially supported 11 children by six women -- two by his wife and nine by five other women -- paying $1,400 a month total out of his $19,600 monthly salary in 2005. [Prolific, eh]? For several years, Belobaba said, Lawrence treated the victim as a physically ill teenager with "spiritual baths" to cast out evil spirits. "I went to Rev. Lawrence seeking help and he was scaring me with evil spirits. I have slept with Satan," the judge quoted her as saying. The Star also reported: > http://www.thestar.com/News/GTA/article/356967 Outside court, defence lawyer Anthony Robbins said he would be seeking bail today pending appeal. "My client is innocent. I cannot comment on the reasonableness of the sentence," he said. The suspect entered the store at about 11:45 p.m. and threatened the clerk with a knife, but fled when the clerk picked up a knife in self defence. Police and the Ontario Provincial Police canine unit searched the area after midnight in an attempt to find the suspect. The search continues for a man about five-feet-seven-inches, 35 years old with a slight build, brown scraggly collar-length hair, clean shaven and gaunt face. At the time of the incident he was wearing a green-grey pullover with a white emblem on the front, blue jeans and a multi-coloured scarf around his face. The federal Conservatives are hoping for a majority government after the next election, which would allow them to scuttle the registry of hunting rifles and shotguns entirely. Until then, they are taking smaller steps to meet their agenda. "Our government is committed to investing in what works," Day says. "This includes a strong licensing system and focusing on combating the criminal use of firearms." That means licensing gun owners rather than registering guns, while cracking down on crimes involving firearms as well as on cross-border gun smuggling. Sources close to the consultation process helping to guide the federal Tories on the issue say there are a number of scenarios that could play out, with scrapping the controversial gun registry at the top of the list. However, until they can do that, they propose some interim measures designed to ensure effective gun safety and protection of the public while not being onerous on gun owners and taxpayers who are footing the bill for a registry that has cost more than $1 billion so far. Initial projections under the previous Liberal regime which brought in the registry estimated taxpayers would be on the hook for a comparatively minuscule $2 million. Some of their ideas include doing away with the need for individuals or businesses to register non-restricted guns (mostly hunting rifles and shotguns) but in order to own a firearm you'd still have to apply for a licence, undergo background checks and pass safety courses before you could possess or purchase a firearm or ammunition. In effect, the proposals would roll back the clock to the pre-registration days, when gun owners had to pass courses and background checks in order to obtain a Firearms Acquisition Certificate, after which they were then free to buy a rifle or shotgun without the need to register it. That compares to today's system where there are two types of gun owners, those who can own their existing firearms but not buy more guns, and those who can both own and buy non-restricted firearms. "I'm still waiting for someone to tell me how it is not safe for me to buy more guns even though I have legally owned my current rifles for about 40 years. It's insane," local hunter Jean Parker says. The feds do want gun owners to get on board with gun control and thus also propose waiving fees to renew or upgrade existing firearms licences until May 2009. They further propose that if you had a possession-only licence and it has expired, you will be able to renew it until May 2009. (Previously once a POL expired it could not be renewed and the gun owner would have to go to huge expense and trouble to go through retraining, as if they never had a gun licence in the first place.) Even if you have had registration certificates revoked because your licence expired, and you get a new POL, you can have those certificates reissued under the federal proposals. And you can still register unregistered guns at no charge and without fear of prosecution until May 2009 under the Tory proposals. An announcement is expected soon, no later than this spring. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2008 11:18:55 -0500 From: Lee Jasper Subject: Bears and spray Bear Pepper Spray: Research and Information by Tom Smith, Ph.D. > http://www.absc.usgs.gov/research/brownbears/pepperspray/news.htm The holy grail on bear spray. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2008 11:23:39 -0500 From: Lee Jasper Subject: Red Tories in the news Snobelen 'very sorry' for not declaring gun Ex MPP fighting criminal record By TOM GODFREY, SUN MEDIA > http://www.torontosun.com/News/Canada/2008/03/27/5116906-sun.html OAKVILLE -- Former Conservative MPP John Snobelen yesterday apologized in court for bringing a gun into the country without declaring it to border officials. "It is very humbling and humiliating to be put through the criminal process," the former Ontario education minister told Justice Stephen Brown. "I am very sorry and I am now in your hands." Snobelen, 53, pleaded guilty last year in an agreed statement of facts to possession of a restricted weapon and careless storage of a firearm. Sentencing began yesterday but was remanded until April 25. Snobelen was a minister from 1995 to 2003 during premier Mike Harris' government. And: Runciman draws fire Tory honcho criticized for 'smoke signals and mirrors' remark on aboriginal affairs budget By JONATHAN JENKINS, QUEEN'S PARK BUREAU > http://www.torontosun.com/News/Canada/2008/03/27/5116981-sun.html Tough-talking interim Opposition Leader Bob Runciman drew fire yesterday after he dismissed the $21-million increase in the aboriginal affairs budget as "smoke signals and mirrors." "I said I think it's just a lot of smoke signals and mirrors," Runciman said about the increase, part of the provincial budget announced Tuesday by Finance Minister Dwight Duncan. Aboriginal Affairs Minister Michael Bryant was quick to jump on the remark. "It's extraordinarily inappropriate and offensive comment and he should withdraw it and he should apologize," Bryant said. "He should apologize to aboriginal leaders as well. It's as simple as that." Bryant said the remark played upon outdated stereotypes and likened it to pro sports teams' logos such as the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves and Washington Redskins, which have come under increasing criticism over the past few years. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2008 10:35:34 -0600 From: Joe Gingrich Subject: Hillary's List of Lies Hillary's List of Lies Thursday, March 27, 2008 7:40 AM By: Dick Morris & Eileen McGann http://www.newsmax.com/morris/hillary_clinton_lies/2008/03/27/83399.html The USA Today/Gallup survey clearly explains why Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is losing. Asked whether the candidates were "honest and trustworthy," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., won with 67 percent, with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., right behind him at 63. Hillary scored only 44 percent, the lowest rating for any candidate for any attribute in the poll. Hillary simply cannot tell the truth. Here's her scorecard: Admitted Lies a.. Chelsea was jogging around the Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. (She was in bed watching it on TV.) a.. Hillary was named after Sir Edmund Hillary. (She admitted she was wrong. He climbed Mt. Everest five years after her birth.) a.. She was under sniper fire in Bosnia. (A girl presented her with flowers at the foot of the ramp.) a.. She learned in The Wall Street Journal how to make a killing in the futures market. (It didn't cover the market back then.) Whoppers She Won't Admit a.. She didn't know about the FALN pardons. a.. She didn't know that her brothers were being paid to get pardons that Clinton granted. a.. Taking the White House gifts was a clerical error. a.. She didn't know that her staff would fire the travel office staff after she told them to do so. a.. She didn't know that the Peter Paul fundraiser in Hollywood in 2000 cost $700,000 more than she reported it had. a.. She opposed NAFTA at the time. a.. She was instrumental in the Irish peace process. a.. She urged Bill to intervene in Rwanda. a.. She played a role in the '90s economic recovery. a.. The billing records showed up on their own. a.. She thought Bill was innocent when the Monica scandal broke. a.. She was always a Yankees fan. a.. She had nothing to do with the New Square Hasidic pardons (after they voted for her 1,400-12 and she attended a meeting at the White House about the pardons). a.. She negotiated for the release of refugees in Macedonia (who were released the day before she got there). With a record like that, is it any wonder that we suspect her of being less than honest and straightforward? Why has McCain jumped out to a nine-point lead over Obama and a seven-point lead over Hillary in the latest Rasmussen poll? OK, Obama has had the Rev. Wright mess on his hands. And Hillary has come in for her share of negatives, like the Richardson endorsement of Obama and the denouement of her latest lie - that she endured sniper fire during a trip to Bosnia. But why has McCain gained so much in so short a period of time? Most polls had the general election tied two weeks ago. a.. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2008 11:36:56 -0600 From: Joe Gingrich Subject: Montague Bail Hearing Adjourned Till April 11th Mar27: Bail Hearing Adjourned Till April 11th News Archive Index http://www.brucemontague.ca/html/NewsArchive.html Thursday, March 27, 2008 11:20 am Hearing: 10am @ Osgoode Hall, 130 Queen Street West Adjourned: 10:30am The crown required further affidavit material rejecting the affidavit of Ryan Kidd and demanding further testimony of the same things that were provided in his affidavit. It was not practicable to produce an affidavit from Bruce on Tuesday with sufficient time to allow two clear days notice with the four day weekend at Easter in between. Therefore the hearing on Thursday, March 27th had to be adjourned until April 11, 2008 when further affidavit material can be provided. These technical demands, though actually unnecessary in this case, were at the instance of the crown, and technically required by Rule 32.1 of the Criminal Appeal Rules of Ontario. A surety is also now being required though there was no breach in 3.5 years of the terms of his own recognizance. Efforts are being made to arrange a surety in the Dryden area. A new affidavit from Bruce will also be required. The efforts thus far have been both costly and time consuming and, in the opinion of the defence, formalistic and overly technical, since 3.5 years of lawful bail prior to trial and the substance of the significant appeal are both well known to the crown. Madam Justice Simmons indicated she would be willing to hear the bail application by telephone to save Mr. Christie a further trip to Toronto from Victoria. It is hoped that this can be arranged but Mr. Christie has made himself available for April 11, 2008 with new affidavit material being prepared, served and filed in the mean time. All of this is costly, exasperating, and frustrating in an appeal such as this. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2008 13:40:55 -0400 From: "D R Goodbrand" Subject: Re: "four machine guns, three grenade launchers and other-weapons" Subject: Re: "four machine guns, three grenade launchers and other assorted weapons...." http://www.nationalpost.com/news/canada/story.html?id=402172 29 arrested on Mohawk reserves Police raids net drugs, guns, $2M in cash Max Harrold, Canwest News Service Published: Thursday, March 27, 2008 Mike Faille, National Post MONTREAL - Twenty-nine people were arrested yesterday as police forces staged drug raids on Mohawk reserves near Montreal, dismantling an alleged drug pipeline into Ontario and the United States. More than 300 officers in 15 raids netted barrels of marijuana worth an estimated $1-million, bundles of cash totalling $2-million, four machine guns, three grenade launchers and other assorted weapons. Police said they made a serious dent in a multi-mil-lion-dollar marijuana operation on the native reserves of Kahnawake, Kanesatake and Akwesasne in western Quebec. "We're sending a message," Gorden McGregor, head of the Quebec First Nations Chiefs of Police Association, said. "Drugs are not acceptable in our communities, clear and simple. It comes down to us. If we don't stop this, who will?" Along with the nearly 115 kilos of marijuana, police also seized 10 luxury vehicles, including high-end SUVs and at least one sports car -- a Ford GT-- worth $250,000. "Not just everyone has these in their homes," Dwayne Zacharie, chief of the Peace Keepers in Kahnawake, on the South Shore, said of the seized AK-47 and M-16 machine guns. One of those arrested was Daniel Dwayne Delisle Jr., 43, of Kahnawake. Police allege he led the ring that took marijuana grown in Mascouche and Chateauguay, near Montreal, and shipped it to the United States through the porous international border inside the Akwesasne Mohawk reserve, which straddles the St. Lawrence River and the borders of Ontario, Quebec and New York state. The drugs were smuggled by boat in the summer and by trucks and skidoo on ice bridges in the winter, explained Ser-geant Michael Harvey of the RCMP's customs and excise section. Some stuffed the marijuana in hockey bags, he said. "They just bring it in through St. Regis, Quebec, and along the main road in Akwesasne. It's a high volume operation. [Smaller] arrests are made all the time" on both the Canadian and the U.S. side, he said. The drug's street value in the United States is double what it is in Canada, Sgt. Harvey said. Chief Zacharie said there was some unease due to the arrests in Kahnawake, where many of the 8,000 residents are extended family members. "We still have to live with the fallout from this," he said. "I want to make sure the community is safe for my family and everyone else's family." Of the 22 men and seven women arrested, ages 23 to 60, eight live in Kahnawake, 10 in Akwesasne, one in the Kanesetake Mohawk reserve near Montreal and 10 in Montreal. They face charges of gangsterism, drug exportation, illegal weapons possession, drug possession, drug trafficking, conspiracy to traffic drugs, conspiracy to export drugs and drug manufacturing. Police are still searching for two more suspected smugglers. Three hundred police officers, including the Kahnawake and Akwesasne Peace Keepers, worked with RCMP and Surete du Quebec on what was known as Operation Cancun, since January, 2007. Officers with the Ontario Provincial Police and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency assisted. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2008 13:47:04 -0400 From: "mred" Subject: Re: " Ont. police seize arsenal in traffic stop;...64 charges" - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Breitkreuz, Garry - Assistant 2" To: "Breitkreuz, Garry - Assistant 1" Sent: Sunday, January 27, 2008 5:04 AM Subject: " Ont. police seize arsenal in traffic stop; Montrealer-64 charges" > Subject: "Ont. police seize arsenal in traffic stop; Montrealer facing 64 > charges" > > PUBLICATION: Montreal Gazette > DATE: 2008.03.27 > EDITION: Final > SECTION: News > PAGE: A9 > DATELINE: AJAX, Ont. > SOURCE: Canwest News Service > WORD COUNT: 149 > > --------------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Ont. police seize arsenal in traffic stop; Montrealer facing 64 charges > > --------------------------------------------------------------------------- > > A Montreal man who police say was caught driving an SUV loaded with guns, > drugs, lab equipment and a grenade is facing 64 charges after being pulled > over Friday in Ajax, Ont. > > Police say Hanna Anastas, 34, was driving a vehicle matching the > description of one wanted by police. > > A uniformed officer pulled Anastas over travelling east on Highway 2 and > found nine firearms, including assault rifles, sawed-off shotguns and a > rifle with a scope. While reporting upon the gang-land style execution of an individual during the birthday party of a five year old, Sedensky focused solely upon the weapon used, but to what end? This is akin to Premier McGuinty declaring war on target shooters in order to solve violent crime on the streets. The AK-47 did not walk up to the victim and start shooting of its own accord. No gun ever will, it takes a thug to kill someone. Make no mistake that a criminal picked up the weapon with full intent to commit a murder, and did so with cold, calculated malice. This crime would not be any less horrific were it were committed with a knife, baseball bat or soup spoon. It is cold-blooded murder of one human being by another, and nothing else, so don't try to blame it on the gun. The problem we face is not deadly AK-47's (prohibited in Canada by the way) roving our streets looking for birthday parties. Our problem is the inability and unwillingness of our Premier and justice officials to deal sternly with real criminals, and who steadfastly refuse to fix the problems with our pitiful turnstile justice system. The so-called "journalism" of Sedensky intentionally deflects public concerns away from the real problems to instead focus upon the firearms of law abiding sports men and women who have never played any part in the carnage on our streets, and don't deserve the treatment they've been handed.
