"The bullet went through the wall and into the living space of the next-door neighbour where it lodged in the door frame of the bathroom," said RCMP Const. Patrick Davies. "The neighbours were home at the time and were very lucky that no one was injured." Davies said the officer was off-duty and is not a member of the Langley detachment. Citing privacy rules, he would not reveal details of where she works or the location of the incident other than to say it was in the township of Langley. He said the officer could potentially be charged with careless use of a firearm. RCMP officers must follow the same strict storage regulations for guns as do other Canadians, Davies said. "When [firearms] are stored in the house, they have to be stored separately from the ammunition and they also have to be stored in an approved container, specifically, like a gun safe or something like that," he said. http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/westcoastnews/story.html?id=92f44f47-11bf-4eca-aa68-9d1e32403044 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, July 12, 2008 11:07 am From: "Breitkreuz, Garry - Assistant 2" Subject: Guns seized at border, tough new law gets test PUBLICATION: The London Free Press DATE: 2008.07.12 EDITION: Final SECTION: News PAGE: A14 BYLINE: NEIL BOWEN, SUN MEDIA DATELINE: SARNIA WORD COUNT: 153 - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guns seized at border, tough new law gets test CRIME: Two Americans were stopped near Sarnia - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- An Ohio soldier and a California prison guard charged with bringing guns into Canada would face tougher jail terms if convicted under a new federal gun law. Changes that took effect May 1 call for mandatory three-year jail terms for offences including possession of prohibited firearms with ammunition. The former minimum penalty was one year. The men were separately charged over the past week, the first Americans charged under the new law at the Blue Water Bridge near Sarnia. In both cases, handguns were seized. In one case, two loaded handguns were found in the vehicle's console. A long gun was also seized. In the other, a handgun was found in a backpack with boxes of ammunition. Switchblade knives were seized in both cases. Parliament's intention is clear and three years is what the two U.S. residents would face, federal prosecutor Michael Robb said Thursday. The men are in custody, awaiting bail hearings. Under the new law, a justice of the peace must consider the increased penalty when determining if an accused should be released. A U.S. citizen charged under the former law was released on bail recently after friends and family posted $10,000 in Sarnia court. Visitors to Canada are routinely given chances to declare their guns at the border. The government's Tackling Violent Crime Act also increases mandatory jail sentences to five years for gun use during an attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery or sexual assault http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/News/Local/2008/07/12/6137086-sun.html ------------------------------ End of Cdn-Firearms Digest V11 #697 *********************************** Submissions: mailto:cdn-firearms-digest@scorpion.bogend.ca Mailing List Commands: mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca Moderator's e-mail address: mailto:drg.jordan@sasktel.net List owner: mailto:owner-cdn-firearms@scorpion.bogend.ca FAQ list: http://www.canfirearms/Skeeter/Faq/cfd-faq1.html Web Site: http://www.canfirearms.ca CFDigest Archives: http://www.canfirearms.ca/archives To unsubscribe from _all_ the lists, put the next four lines in a message and mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca unsubscribe cdn-firearms-digest unsubscribe cdn-firearms-chat unsubscribe cdn-firearms end (To subscribe, use "subscribe" instead of "unsubscribe".)
