Alberta Justice, the RCMP and band leaders from four reserves in the Hobbema area south of Edmonton have announced a weapons amnesty from Aug. 1 to Nov. 1 in a bid to reduce violent crime. The amnesty is the latest tactic officials have used to keep 13 gangs on the reserves in check since a 23-month-old girl was wounded last April in a drive-by shooting. RCMP said that all weapons turned in will be tested and charges could follow if any are found to have been stolen or used in a crime. Immediately after the shooting, the RCMP reinforced the Hobbema detachment with extra officers, and the community imposed a 10:00 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew on young people between 12 and 17. Police have blamed gangs fighting over the drug trade for the violence. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2008 15:09:29 -0400 From: Lee Jasper Subject: Re: Cdn-Firearms Digest V11 #737 Al commented: > In supporting the antigun Crime Bill Garry sent out a clear message that > he > will vote along party lines. Under Harper if Breitkreuz doesn't show in the House when summoned by the Party Whip , , and vote for a Party bill as instructed, , , he'd be banned from the gov't caucus and his membership in the CPC would be pulled. He'd be sent home to Yorkton, all his offices closed, his staff sent to the unemployment line - and we'd lose our most persistent voice on the Hill. Remember Casey from N.S.? There goes the representation for his Riding and taking 'the fall' from a K.O. gains the RFC nothing. The man's gotta keep juking and jiving, bobbing and weaving and counter punch every chance he gets. Even the 'Strangler' (the arrogant little bugger; socially illiterate in both of Canada's official languages) provided greater leeway for his MPs to 'vote their conscience' and to pair off in the House to avoid supporting contentious bills. (Of course the Cretch must have had some measure of Libertarian blood in his veins). I suggest that Mr. Harper has an 'obsession to control' bordering on psychosis that would get his micro managing ass kicked out of most corporations in the Nation. I gotta admit tho, with some of the dead wood in our CPC caucus, , , , but the axiom remains, 'ya gotta stick with those who brought ya to the dance' and Harper did sign their nomination papers. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2008 15:44:18 -0400 From: Lee Jasper Subject: Re: Working Together: The Operation In responding to Alfred, 10X commented: > Repeal of the firearms act without ammending sections 91 and 92 of the > criminal code of Canada will leave possession of firearms as being > illegal > in Canada - for everyone. The end result is the same and the gov't doesn't get painted as Neanderthals by the main stream media and spurned by the electorate for another 15-20 years. If only 'one' solution is proffered , , , the RFC will never gain the consensus to be 'heard' by gov't... We (you) will be avoided and relegated to the 'no sense talking to those extremists' file. You'll get less attention than activists did with the Libs. Even the NRA only got a smidgen in its first joust with the S.C. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2008 13:03:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Bruce Mills Subject: Hobbema gun amnesty to begin Aug. 1 - Edmonton Journal http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/news/story.html?id=a53030f4-acb7-4dd3-beda-a0e7d5ebf2c6 Hobbema gun amnesty to begin Aug. 1 Steve Lillebuen, edmontonjournal.com Published: 11:51 am EDMONTON - A gun amnesty believed to be the first of its kind in Canada will begin in Hobbema next month. Police will begin accepting illegal or unwanted firearms and ammunition for a full four months, beginning Aug. 1. Every gun turned in to police is one less that can get into the hands of a criminal, said Justice Minister Alison Redford. "Just think about it: guns off the street will mean less crime. That's pretty simple," she said, adding that the province is going though tremendous change and the people of Hobbema have decided to take ownership of their community. "All of the answers aren't here today, but we're trying to be very proactive in talking with communities about how they want to define themselves and how they want to live." It's believed to be the first time a gun amnesty has taken place on a First Nations reserve, said Public Security Minister Fred Lindsay. The idea of a gun amnesty was born out of consultation with citizens who want to help reduce criminal activity and gang violence, said RCMP "K" Division Assistant Commissioner Bill Smith. The amnesty comes after years of persistent violence and gang activity in the small community, about 90 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. In April, 23-month-old Asia Saddleback was in the kitchen of her Hobbema home on the Samson First Nation when a bullet fired from a passing vehicle tore through home and struck her in the abdomen. She spent nearly two weeks in hospital. The shooting was linked to gang violence on the reserve. The incident galvanized the community to do something about the growing problem, said Carolyn Buffalo, a community member and councillor for the Montana First Nation. "It mobilized us to take action because such a thing should never ever occur to anyone in any community," she said. "We want our community safe." Those who turn in their weapons will not be charged with possession of an unlicensed or unregistered firearm, RCMP pledge. However, if a weapon is found to have been stolen or was used to commit a crime, an investigation may ensue and result in charges. All firearms, including shotguns, replicas and pellet guns, will be accepted, as will dangerous weapons like knives. To hand in an unwanted firearm, residents must contact the Hobbema RCMP at 780-585-3893. An officer will then pick up the weapon from their residence. slillebuen@thejournal.canwest.com ------------------------------ End of Cdn-Firearms Digest V11 #788 *********************************** Submissions: mailto:cdn-firearms-digest@scorpion.bogend.ca Mailing List Commands: mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca Moderator's e-mail address: mailto:drg.jordan@sasktel.net List owner: mailto:owner-cdn-firearms@scorpion.bogend.ca FAQ list: http://www.canfirearms/Skeeter/Faq/cfd-faq1.html Web Site: http://www.canfirearms.ca CFDigest Archives: http://www.canfirearms.ca/archives To unsubscribe from _all_ the lists, put the next four lines in a message and mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca unsubscribe cdn-firearms-digest unsubscribe cdn-firearms-chat unsubscribe cdn-firearms end (To subscribe, use "subscribe" instead of "unsubscribe".)
