Blair Wilson, an embattled former Liberal MP who was expelled from his party's caucus last year over allegations of improper spending, announced on Saturday that he was joining the Green team. "Today we make history," said Green party Leader Elizabeth May. "I am grateful for Mr. Wilson's principled belief that the Green party deserves a voice in Parliament and for his firm commitment to democracy." Mr. Wilson, who will serve as the Greens' shadow immigration critic, said he looked forward to representing the party in the House of Commons. "I am extremely happy and proud to be able to join Elizabeth and the Green party and do something so positive for two core values that my family and I deeply believe in," said Mr. Wilson. "One of those obviously is protecting the environment and the other one is advancing the cause of democracy." Mr. Wilson, who has sat as an independent MP for the past year, has said that a recent Elections Canada investigation cleared him of any serious wrongdoing. "Not only do I embrace the policies of my new party, I will feel that all my past difficulties are justified if, by my actions, I can make a real difference by ensuring Elizabeth May is included in the leaders' debates," said Mr. Wilson. "There is a democracy deficit in Canadian politics and this is one step in restoring effective democracy in Canada." Ms. May said the move would ensure that she could participate in the leaders' debates in the next election campaign. "It should not have been a question that required the kinds of efforts we have made to secure my participation in the debates," said Ms. May. "We have established ourselves as a party that cannot be described as fringe. We are a party whose ideas and policies are now in the mainstream." Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected over the next few days to ask the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and start a general election campaign that would see Canadians heading to the polls in mid-October. Mr. Harper has argued that Parliament is deadlocked and cannot function properly unless the opposition parties make compromises and agree to work with the government. He is scheduled to meet with NDP Leader Jack Layton to discuss the situation later on Saturday. But on Friday, following a meeting with Mr. Harper, Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe said he was convinced that the prime minister was intent on calling an election. mdesouza@canwest.com - -- -- Related Topics Canadian Politics http://www.nationalpost.com/related/topics/index.html?subject=Canadian+Politics&type=Topic Election Campaigns http://www.nationalpost.com/related/topics/index.html?subject=Election+Campaigns&type=Topic Bloc Quebecois http://www.nationalpost.com/related/topics/index.html?subject=Bloc+Quebecois&type=Organization Blair Wilson http://www.nationalpost.com/related/topics/index.html?subject=Blair+Wilson&type=Person Elizabeth May http://www.nationalpost.com/related/topics/index.html?subject=Elizabeth+May&type=Person ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Aug 2008 08:50:57 -0500 From: "Live to Ride" Subject: Re: Lieberal election signs I never knew the Liberals had a copy right to the Canadian Flag, how can that be? It is their national logo, dontchaknow? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'd believe it. After all Gene Simmons from the Glam rock band 'Kiss' apparently owns the patient on this- "$" only the double strike through one, I do believe. Or so I've seen him say on the tube, in an interview with him. If I get some time, I'll if I can find a source to confirm this for you. - -DRGJ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 19:46:17 -0400 From: "mred" Subject: Re: "Newfoundlanders have highest per-capita firearmsownership..." - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bruce Mills" To: Sent: Friday, August 29, 2008 6:18 PM Subject: "Newfoundlanders have highest per-capita firearms ownership..." > Subject: "Newfoundlanders have highest per-capita firearms ownership in > country - St. John's Telegram" > > > http://www.thetelegram.com/index.cfm?sid=165106&sc=79 > > Guns Galore > Newfoundlanders have highest per-capita firearms ownership in country > > DAVID WHALEN > The Telegram > Last updated at 9:27 AM on 24/08/08 > > If the federal government's numbers are right, Newfoundlanders and > Labradorians are Canada's most heavily armed citizens, but also its least > trigger-happy. > > > Gun owners and hunters in the province believe the numbers reflect the > province's close ties to the environment and citizens' respect for the > responsibilities of owning a firearm. > > "Hunting is very much a part of what we are," said Ward Samson, president > of the Newfoundland and Labrador Wildlife Federation. They have the gall to use the Canadian flag as the backdrop for their signs. The lawn signs have the maple leaf in the middle with one red border. However, the larger road signs have the maple leaf in the middle with red borders on both sides: in other words, the full Canadian flag. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 21:53:41 -0600 From: "Roger" Subject: Re: Lieberal election signs > If Harper announces a federal election next week, then the country will be > full of these disgusting signs. I saw the first commercial tonight, promoting Harper as the best choice for PM in the next election. If Harper is already televising election commercials about himself as the best leader, it means he has decided to call an election very soon. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 22:12:11 -0600 From: Larry James Fillo Subject: "Sarah Palin, a straight shooting, Moose skinning,...of girl." Wow. Compare that to here where the best we get to vote for is a leader whose government just made simple, unlicenced possession of a handgun so serious an offence as to result in a Mandatory Minimum three years in jail. No violence, nor threat of violence required. While, here where I live people who stab or beat someone to death often get 3 years in jail, unless they are female and aboriginal then some get zero jail time. From past experience what they do to handguns they soon do to long arms, too. I'm going to pull up Johnny Horton's North to Alaska on youtube and pine. ------------------------------ End of Cdn-Firearms Digest V12 #36 ********************************** Submissions: mailto:cdn-firearms-digest@scorpion.bogend.ca Mailing List Commands: mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca Moderator's e-mail address: mailto:drg.jordan@sasktel.net List owner: mailto:owner-cdn-firearms@scorpion.bogend.ca FAQ list: http://www.canfirearms/Skeeter/Faq/cfd-faq1.html Web Site: http://www.canfirearms.ca CFDigest Archives: http://www.canfirearms.ca/archives To unsubscribe from _all_ the lists, put the next four lines in a message and mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca unsubscribe cdn-firearms-digest unsubscribe cdn-firearms-chat unsubscribe cdn-firearms end (To subscribe, use "subscribe" instead of "unsubscribe".)
