Police identified Mohamed Ali Ibrahim on Sunday as the man found dead following gunfire on the Enoch reserve around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. A 20-year-old woman who was at the casino that night is recovering in hospital from undisclosed injuries. She recently moved to Edmonton from Ontario, but police are not confirming she knew Ibrahim. A fight had erupted at the casino's Touch Ultra Lounge late that evening. Before police arrived at the club just west of Edmonton, the fight had moved outside and Ibrahim was found dead lying face down near the casino's main entrance. Witnesses said he appeared to have been shot and suffering from a serious head wound. The medical examiner won't confirm the cause of death until after an autopsy, which is scheduled for Tuesday. Ibrahim has family in Toronto. Const. Barb Roy of the Stony Plain RCMP said investigators are interviewing several witnesses and reviewing casino security camera footage. But many details of the investigation are being kept away from the public eye. Officers are with holding if they have any suspects, if a possible motive is known and if the victim was known to police. Investigators won't confirm if the victim knew anyone at the casino or if he was there by himself. Whether possible links between the homicide and gang or drug activity are being investigated are not being disclosed at this time. Officers from the Stony Plain RCMP and Edmonton's major crimes unit are involved in the investigation. slillebuen@thejournal.canwest.com © The Edmonton Journal 2008 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Sep 2008 16:58:04 -0600 From: "David R.G. Bansaid, owner of Ahwaz Hookah House on West Georgia Street, was told to shut his business Sunday because he was violating the city's anti-smoking bylaw. He's choosing to stand his ground. Bansaid opened for business Sunday and vowed to stay open "today, tomorrow and into the distant future," despite the threat of fines and forced closure. Last year, smoking was banned on all restaurant and bar patios and in smoking rooms and transit shops in Vancouver, with the exception of hookah lounges. Now, however, the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority has told Bansaid and Abdolhamid Mohammadian of the Persian Tea House on Davie Street that they, too, are covered by the ban. "It doesn't make sense to me," said Bansaid, who switched some time ago from tobacco to herbal products in the hookah pipes at his lounge. "It has no tobacco. No nicotine. No tar. Nothing. It's made of red beet." For Bansaid, the whole idea of a hookah lounge is to provide a social setting for Muslims, who may not drink. Even worse, with Ramadan beginning today, if his business is shut down, Muslim customers won't have anywhere to go to smoke the hookah. "If they close us down, they're basically taking away our right as a multicultural society," he said. "Each of us has a culture we can't leave behind. It comes with the person." mcootauco@theprovince.com © The Vancouver Province 2008 ------------------------------ End of Cdn-Firearms Digest V12 #50 ********************************** Submissions: mailto:cdn-firearms-digest@scorpion.bogend.ca Mailing List Commands: mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca Moderator's e-mail address: mailto:drg.jordan@sasktel.net List owner: mailto:owner-cdn-firearms@scorpion.bogend.ca FAQ list: http://www.canfirearms/Skeeter/Faq/cfd-faq1.html Web Site: http://www.canfirearms.ca CFDigest Archives: http://www.canfirearms.ca/archives To unsubscribe from _all_ the lists, put the next four lines in a message and mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca unsubscribe cdn-firearms-digest unsubscribe cdn-firearms-chat unsubscribe cdn-firearms end (To subscribe, use "subscribe" instead of "unsubscribe".)
