Judge Lee Ann Martin also barred the youth -- who turns 18 next week -- from possessing firearms for life. "I hope you never pick up a gun again," Martin said. "I do too," the youth responded. Court heard the Crown would have had no evidence to convict the youth were it not for his confession to police several days after Shuya's death. The youth, an admitted member of the Indian Posse street gang, told police he had been selling crack earlier in the day when he and Shuya broke into a garage on Home Street and Shuya found an air rifle. The youth, not knowing the rifle was loaded, grabbed it from Shuya and it discharged in his face. The youth then ran to a neighbouring house, told the people inside to call 911 and "fled in a panic," said defence lawyer John Corona. Shuya was taken to hospital in critical condition and died two days later. The youth was originally charged with criminal negligence causing death but pleaded guilty earlier this summer to careless use of a firearm. He had been in custody since his arrest in early March. Crown attorney Raegan Rankin urged Martin to sentence the youth to a lengthy period of probation so as to address his substance abuse problem and allow him to sever his gang ties. "I hope that time is enough to convince (him) to change his lifestyle," Rankin said. "There is nothing he can do for the Shuya family but take this opportunity to become a better person." Shuya's mother echoed that sentiment in a victim impact statement. "I hope you learn from this experience ... and do something with your life because Cody will never have that chance at life," Jennifer Shuya wrote. "Be a good role model for your brothers and sisters because I know them and they are good kids. Do the right things in life because you have a second chance." http://www.winnipegsun.com/News/Winnipeg/2008/09/06/6679976-sun.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2008 12:59:56 -0400 From: "Breitkreuz, Garry - Assistant 2" Subject: Girls gunning for safety PUBLICATION: The Calgary Sun DATE: 2008.09.06 EDITION: Final SECTION: News PAGE: 2 ILLUSTRATION: photo by Jack Cusano, Sun Media Cori Van Der Leest takes aim, one of numerous Calgary women using shooting ranges. BYLINE: DOUG MCINTYRE AND KATIE SCHNEIDER, SUN MEDIA WORD COUNT: 278 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Girls gunning for safety Women target recreation shooting as a pastime for stress relief and protection - -------------------------------------------------------------------------= Sisters are doing it for themselves, complete with a holster. The owner of a Calgary shooting range says more and more women are purchasing guns and taking up target practice -- and violent crime on city streets is one of the reasons. "Women, in general, are far more independent than they used to be and shooting is a very independent sport ... so because of that, it attracts a lot more women now," said J.R. Cox, owner of the Shooting Edge at 510 77 Ave. S.E. "There are more women buying guns because more of them are living on their own and saying 'I want something in the house for protection.' " Cox said the feminine portion of his clientele has surged from five to 30% in the last five years. Crimes against women partially account for this increase, he said. Cori Van Der Leest, 28, moved to Calgary from Taber three years ago and has worked at Shooting Edge the past two years. "I do believe a lot of women here in Calgary are scared," she said. "I would say in the last six months especially, I've seen more women come in here with their boyfriend or their spouse just for the added comfort." Though carrying handguns for self-protection is prohibited in Canada, just being weapon-savvy adds an extra layer of comfort for women in the big city, she said. Orlando Mancina, owner of International Tactical Training Academy in Calgary, said he has also noticed an increase of women in their 20s and 30s taking the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and buying guns to become more knowledgeable about the weapons. "The key reason they do it is to be more aware of a firearm and to be comfortable around it -- I don't think it's primarily for self-defence," he said. Const. Jeff Van Caeyzeele, with the National Weapons Enforcement Support Team, said any time anyone feels threatened, he or she should notify police rather than taking action with guns. "We don't want citizens arming themselves for self-defence -- we don't want citizens taking matters into their own hands," he said. There are numerous responsible Calgarians enjoying target practice for sport. "As long as they are responsible with it, we don't have a problem," he said. Van Der Leest said a little target practice is a great way to blow off steam. "For me, shooting is kind of empowering -- it's a great stress reliever," she said. http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/Alberta/2008/09/06/6678986-sun.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2008 11:24:15 -0600 From: Larry James Fillo Subject: "How a Canuck colonel took the Taliban fight too far" Scott Taylor raises some good questions and adds information I've not seen elsewhere. An official analysis would be helpful, especially so as during the election the Opposition parties and the MSM will attempt to define the issue their way. I've read more analysis from Australian sources than Canadian. I would have thought this would be a prime opportunity for the ANA to prove themselves. My take is that the Taliban/Al Quai-da leaders know there are elections on in the U.S.A. and soon Canada. So they are doing everything they can to intimidate the voting public. I suspect that increased attacks by U.S. forces in the tribal areas of Pakistan is also a contributing factor. http://www.torontosun.com/Comment/2008/09/06/6678086-sun.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, September 6, 2008 11:04 am From: "Breitkreuz, Garry - Assistant 2" Subject: Guns stolen during break-in PUBLICATION: New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal DATE: 2008.09.06 SECTION: News PAGE: B8 BYLINE: JEFF DUCHARME TELEGRAPH-JOURNAL WORD COUNT: 229 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guns stolen during break-in - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- After a pair of break-ins in the town, police are now facing the disturbing reality that three guns and some ammunition are in the hands of thieves. But Sgt. Gary Fournier of the RCMP said police have suspects and believe the culprits and the stolen guns will be in police hands within days. "Hopefully, we'll have it solved very soon and have those firearms recovered, " said Fournier. "Any time firearms are unaccounted for and in the hands of somebody you don't know, there's obviously a concern for everybody." On Thursday afternoon, two homes in Grand Bay-Westfield were broken into and three guns and ammunition were stolen from one of the homes, located on the Nerepis Road. The stolen items included a Canon camera, an Xbox 360 computer game, a Dell laptop computer and two chests. At the house on Country Club Drive, thieves stole two Dell laptops, two iPods and even hauled away two small safes. And in a bizarre twist, even footwear was stolen. A number of other items were also stolen from both houses. The thefts mirrored each other since thieves went on a spree and rummaged through the houses, leaving a state of disarray in their wake. "I suspect that that's what we're going to find at the end of the day - it's the same people responsible for both," said Fournier. But, he said, police aren't ruling out the possibility that the similarities in both break and enters are coincidental. The safes, he said, were likely taken away to be opened later. "Maybe they didn't have the time to access the safes while they were in there doing the break and enters and they needed that time without looking over their shoulders." http://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com/search/article/407024 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2008 13:12:59 -0400 From: "mred" Subject: Re: Only in the U.S.A. - Pity! - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lee Jasper" To: "Canadian Firearms Digest" Sent: Saturday, September 06, 2008 10:17 AM Subject: Only in the U.S.A. - Pity! > Pity Canadian politics is so drab. > >> http://www.stopthinkvote.com/palin.html > > Sarah Palin affair allegations > > Out of 46 vice presidents, 14 - or a little more than 30% - have become > president. Host Won't Interview Palin Cc: Stephane Dion MP , Prime Minister Harper , Jack Layton MP , Gilles Duceppe MP Republican VP Nominee Sarah Palin Isn't Welcome on 'Oprah' Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin By EMILY FRIEDMAN Sept. 5, 2008 She may have let Tom Cruise jump all over her couch, but Oprah Winfrey says that Sarah Palin can't even sit on it. At least not until after the presidential election, that is. Responding to media reports first publicized on Matt Drudge's "The Drudge Report" claiming there was turmoil at Winfrey's Harpo Studios about whether to book the GOP vice presidential nominee on the popular talk show, Winfrey's camp said today that while she has nothing against Palin, the veep hopeful won't appear on the show anytime soon. "The item in today's 'Drudge Report' is categorically untrue," Winfrey said in a written statement provided to ABCNews.com. "There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show. "At the beginning of the presidential campaign, when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates," Winfrey wrote. "I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over." But Winfrey, who publicly endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama in May 2008, is being widely criticized by some fans of the show who say she's being unfair and biased. She's being two-faced," said Dr. Cindy Grossman-Green, a pediatrician and Oprah fan from outside Philadelphia. "She initially had Obama on her show, but now that she's decided [to support him], she won't have any other political candidates on." Grossman-Green is referring to the two times Obama appeared on Winfrey's show prior to announcing his plans to run for the presidency, once in January 2005 and, more recently, in October 2006. Some Winfrey fans say that Obama's appearance on the show at all -- regardless of the timing and his political aspirations during his visits -- are irrelevant and that Winfrey's decision to blacklist Palin from her show could very well backfire. "I don't think most people even care about the timing [of when Obama went on the show]," Grossman-Green said. "They just know Winfrey is pro-Obama Once she brings Obama on and opens the door to political people [on her show], it's only fair to bring both Republicans and Democrats on," she added. But, according to mother and Winfrey fan Donna Chaffins, when Obama appeared on the show does matter. "Personally, as long as she claims she will not use her show as a platform and as long as she doesn't campaign for him on the show, I have no problem with her waiting to have Palin on the show," Chaffins said. Chaffins said that she "would have an issue" if, now that nominations have been decided, Winfrey had only the Democratic candidates on and not the Republicans. "I want her to be fair," said Chaffins, who is undecided on whom she will vote for come November. Can Oprah Balance Her Support for Obama With Her Support for Women? While Winfrey's endorsement of Obama is here to stay, why she will not invite Palin on her show, as one of the powerful women she often features, is unclear to many fans who said that regardless of her policies, Palin is making history. "Whether you agree with Sarah Palin and her positions or not, the fact that she's the first female Republican vice presidential candidate is historical," said Joanne Bamberger, who runs the blog Punditmom1.blogspot.com. "I'd have to imagine her audience would really want to see Palin," said Bamberger, who said that she is voting Democratic but still would love to see Palin interviewed by Winfrey. "It seems to me that Winfrey's show is all about empowering women." By not having Palin on the show, Grossman-Green says that Winfrey is actually doing a disservice to her predominantly female audience, many of whom look for inspiration in the guests who appear on the show. "She's doing an injustice to women by not having Palin on," Grossman-Green said. "Palin is a wonderful role model of what we're all trying to do as working women -- which is everything." But not everyone thinks that it would make sense for Oprah to counter her support for Obama by allowing Palin to appear on her show. "Having Palin on the show would be a conflict of interest," said Elwood Watson, a professor of history and African-American studies at East Tennessee State University and co-author of "The Oprah Phenomenon." "She's made up her mind, and she's not going to sway from it," said Watson, when asked whether it would be plausible for Winfrey to simultaneously support Obama and interview Palin on her show, which could be interpreted as an endorsement. "How can you endorse two people?" With almost 1,000 comments on her community message board dedicated to a possible Palin interview, Winfrey is already garnering strong reaction among her fans -- both those who are pleased with her decision and those who are not, such as Grossman-Green. "I'm actually pretty angry with her right now because of this," she said. "I don't think I will be a gung-ho supporter right now. "I'd think twice about switching her on or even buying her magazine." http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=5736716&page=1 ------------------------------ End of Cdn-Firearms Digest V12 #84 ********************************** Submissions: mailto:cdn-firearms-digest@scorpion.bogend.ca Mailing List Commands: mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca Moderator's e-mail address: mailto:drg.jordan@sasktel.net List owner: mailto:owner-cdn-firearms@scorpion.bogend.ca FAQ list: http://www.canfirearms/Skeeter/Faq/cfd-faq1.html Web Site: http://www.canfirearms.ca CFDigest Archives: http://www.canfirearms.ca/archives To unsubscribe from _all_ the lists, put the next four lines in a message and mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca unsubscribe cdn-firearms-digest unsubscribe cdn-firearms-chat unsubscribe cdn-firearms end (To subscribe, use "subscribe" instead of "unsubscribe".)
