George's brother lauded By THE CANADIAN PRESS > http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2008/11/21/7484331-sun.html Sam George, the brother of slain aboriginal activist Dudley George, has been invested into the Order of Ontario. George received the province's highest honour yesterday from Lt.-Gov. David Onley. Dudley George was shot and killed by an OPP officer in September 1995 during an occupation of Ipperwash Provincial Park. His brother, Sam, called repeatedly on the province to hold an inquiry into the shooting, and it was finally launched in November 2003. George, 56, who is suffering from lung and pancreatic cancer, said his goal was always to respect and honour the memory of his 38-year-old brother. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2008 21:39:13 -0500 From: Lee Jasper Subject: Comment on the Throne speech Thanks to Dennis and Bruce for digging this tidbit out. Does this acknowledgment suggest that the RFC got the gov't's attention during the past campaign. > Gun laws will be focused on ending smuggling and stronger > penalties for gun crimes, not at criminalizing law-abiding > firearms owners. If so, might we expect our new and Inclusive gov't to flesh-out what this new spirit might actually mean in terms of policy? I've yet to see much evidence of any attempt to decriminalize normally compulsively law abiding (but underground or principled and unlicensed) gun owners. To make this claim means that some 'new' direction at eliciting an opt-in from non-compliant owners must be in the wings. Now I realize that politicians say all kinds of things for 'effect' not for substance. Let's hope this is not simply more busy-talk or fodder to keep the troops at bay. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2008 10:40:13 -0500 From: Lee Jasper Subject: CFO's continuous supervision lacking? > http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/540945 Keith Delong, 66, allegedly behind triple-murder suicide in quiet Scarborough bungalow [Delong was a gun owner and hunter] - --------------------- Retired Toronto police officer charged in wife's laying > http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2008/11/10/ryan-homicide.html A retired Toronto police officer has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing of his wife. The Throne Speech is essentially the goernment's "working document". We can now add this to all the other things in getting them to repeal C-68, especially CCC s 91 & 92, which "criminalize" simple gun ownership. All that remains is "doing the work" by writing letters and holding their feet to the fire... Yours in LIBERTY! We've lived through the problem before, due to Flaherty slashing taxes and expecting 'trickle down' economics to replace lost revenue]. Budget boss blames Tories for deficit By PETER ZIMONJIC > http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2008/11/21/7484356-sun.html The Conservative government's decision to cut the GST and slash corporate taxes -- and not the global economic downturn -- is the cause of a looming deficit, parliamentary budget officer Kevin Page said yesterday in his first report on the state of government finances. "Tax revenues are down ...due in large part to the recent policy measures such as the second one-percentage point reduction in the Goods and Services Tax and reductions in corporate taxes," the report says. In October 2007, the government announced it would cut the federal corporate tax rate from 22.12% in 2007 to 15% by 2012. The rate is 19.5% this year and will drop to 19% next year. Page's assessment drew applause from the Liberals, who described him as brave for standing up to the government. "The global economic situation has yet to actually impact Canadian budget numbers, that will take months and perhaps even a year to really see the impact," said Scott Brison, Liberal finance critic. "Mr. Harper and Mr. Flaherty are simply misleading Canadians when they blame the current fiscal situation and weakness on global economic situations." Page's report says Canadians could expect a small budget surplus this year, but a deficit next year that could be up to $13.8 billion, and deficits of over $10 billion for the next four years. Page's projections use spending figures from the Department of Finance and are based on the assumption that government policy doesn't change. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2008 04:08:10 -0800 From: R. Scraping the FIrearms Act would save $84 million or more dollars a year. Money that could be better used to catch, convict, incarcerate, and rehabilitate criminals. ------------------------------ End of Cdn-Firearms Digest V12 #616 *********************************** Submissions: mailto:cdn-firearms-digest@scorpion.bogend.ca Mailing List Commands: mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca Moderator's e-mail address: mailto:drg.jordan@sasktel.net List owner: mailto:owner-cdn-firearms@scorpion.bogend.ca FAQ list: http://www.canfirearms/Skeeter/Faq/cfd-faq1.html Web Site: http://www.canfirearms.ca CFDigest Archives: http://www.canfirearms.ca/archives To unsubscribe from _all_ the lists, put the next four lines in a message and mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca unsubscribe cdn-firearms-digest unsubscribe cdn-firearms-chat unsubscribe cdn-firearms end (To subscribe, use "subscribe" instead of "unsubscribe".)
