Cdn-Firearms Digest Thursday, December 18 2008 Volume 12 : Number 835 In this issue: Meeting with Minister Flaherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2008 15:56:07 -0600 From: Edward Hudson Subject: Meeting with Minister Flaherty CUFOA After Action Report Meeting with Minister Flaherty Thursday, 18 December 2008 Last evening Joe Gingrich, Zeny Martín, Jack Wilson, Elaine Travis, & I attended a “Cocktail Reception” with the Honourable Jim Flaherty, P.C., M.P., Minister of Finance, Government of Canada. Along with the delicious appetizers, good conversation with fellow concerned citizens, and hearing a direct report from Ottawa on the economic status of Canada, the obvious highlight of the evening was meeting Mr. Flaherty. Somewhat unusual for these types of events, Mr. Flaherty truly was not in any hurry to exit the reception after his presentation. We had ample, unhurried opportunity to introduce ourselves to Mr. Flaherty, and to speak with him about the reason we each paid $100.00 apiece to get inside from the windy, minus 25 degree Celsius weather outside Saskatoon’s Centennial Auditorium. We also met and spoke with Ted Menzies, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, who is the MP from Macleod, Alberta. We were also able to renew our relationship with Ms. Lynne Yelich, M.P., Saskatoon-Blackstrap, who is now the Honourable Minister of State (Western Economic Diversification), and met the newly elected Ms. Kelly Block, M.P. for Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar. While we did not obtain any promises to free us from the unjust licensing requirement of the Firearms Act, we did once again remind them that we are not going away. Either they honour the Conservative Party Policy to respect the Right of Canadians to own firearms, or they put us in prison. Obviously, we hope our follow-up letters to these Honourable Sirs and Madams will be more effective than the bit of “face time” we had with them (please see letters copied below). Resources Expended: Two (2) hours eating a HUGE variety of appetizers, $500.00 (of which we will receive an approximate 50 – 60 % federal income tax credit next year), and; - - Travel time from Edmonton for Ms.Martín, & three hours cold, winter travel for Joe Gingrich. Our thanks to Willy Floyd, Rock Creek, British Columbia, for his gracious contribution. Sincerely, Edward B. We especially appreciated the opportunity to meet you afterwards and to discuss briefly our concerns. As we mentioned, our primary concern is the way in which the Conservative Government each year wastes millions of our tax dollars implementing the inefficient Firearms Act, an unjust law that violates the Rights of responsible Canadian citizens to have ‘Armes for their Defense’. We would like to offer a “four-in-one” solution to this problem; cancel all funding to the Firearms Act, and in its place implement a Firearms Prohibition Registry. This action would: (1) stop wasting our tax dollars on an ineffective licensing system, (2) preserve our Right to defend ourselves, (3) provide an effective manner to actually promote public safety, and (4) stimulate the economy in a meaningful manner. This logical, simple action, which your fellow Conservative Caucus member Garry Breitkreuz has been advocating for years, would be an immediate way in which to put “shovels in the ground” by effectively utilizing staff and equipment that are currently being wasted in monitoring responsible citizens while ignoring those who perpetrate violent crime. We trust that you will implement this common-sense recommendation. Sincerely, Edward B. Hudson DVM, MS Secretary Encl: Firearms Prohibition Registry CC: Prime Minister Stephen Harper & Members of Parliament Canadian Unlicensed Firearms Owners Association Association canadienne des propriétaires d’armes sans permis 402 Skeena Crt. Thank you for taking the time to introduce yourself and listening to our concerns - not about the economy - but about the Firearms Act. I appreciate your mentioning that you are personally familiar with ridiculous requirements of this unjust, ineffective law. My associates and I are committed to protecting our Right as responsible Canadian citizens to have ‘Armes for their Defense’. We are doing this by peaceful, non-violent non-compliance to the Firearms Act. After almost seven years since the federal Government mandated the licensing requirement, we continue to own our firearms without a firearms license. Between the five CUFOA members whom you met, we own over fifty unregistered firearms of all types – pistols, revolvers, . 22’s, shotguns, hunting rifles, and military “assault” rifles. I am sure the news media would describe what we illegally possess as a “virtual arsenal”. Even though we are in active, public, willful violation of section 92(1) of the Criminal Code, we are welcome members of our local Conservative EDA’s. We are welcome to donate funds to the Conservative Party, and we are welcome to work in the Conservative election campaigns. Yet Mr. Harper and his Conservative Government continue to fund this unjust, ineffective law that declares us criminals. As we said to Minister Flaherty, we believe it is past time for the Conservatives to honour the Conservative Party Policy and replace the Firearms Act with the Firearms Prohibition Registry. We would most appreciate your endorsement of this action to Mr. Harper and the Conservative Caucus. Sincerely, Edward B.
