It's not enough. It's time to throw away the key. The shooting at a busy subway station in Toronto this week is only the latest in a string of such outrages. Each time it happens politicians shake their fists and vow to crack down. Until the next time. It's true that thanks to Harper, people accused of serious crimes with guns must show the court why they are not a threat to the public, before they can be released on bail. Good. But let's face it: Existing laws around gun crime are not doing the job, bail or no bail. If they were, young men with handguns would not feel it appropriate to shoot at one another in public places. Set aside the federal gun registry, which was a waste. The registry made life difficult for law-abiding gun hobbyists, collectors, hunters and farmers, but did nothing to reduce illegal hand-gun use. Criminals don't acquire permits. The truth, as any urban cop will tell you, is that most handguns used in crimes in Canada are smuggled across the Canada-U. S. border in the backs of trucks. For years Canadian politicians have bleated to their U. S. counterparts about this problem and received little more than shrugs in response. Here at home, we need an entirely new definition of this crime -- call it wanton shooting with an illegal handgun in a public place, with callous disregard for the lives and safety of others -- with an entirely new category of sentence, such as life in prison. If they faced 20 years in a prison cell with no chance of parole, these young thugs might very well think twice about their life choices and their so-called subculture. -- Michael Den Tandt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2009 12:24:18 -0600 From: "David R.G. The Crown says it will disclose evidence of a clandestine, undercover investigation in 2006 into the illegal sale of dangerous substances stored on the farm, sometimes on clear display. The illicit product, which spawned 20 charges against farm owner Michael Schmidt, is unpasteurized milk, and he’s in court defending peoples’ right to drink it. In fact, he drank a big gulp from a mason jar in court during a recess. While raw milk is legal to drink, it’s illegal to sell across the country, and Schmidt has been charged in connection with selling it to about 150 customers. In an attempt to get around the law, he runs a so-called cow share program, in which customers pay to share ownership of a cow, and they are then entitled to some of its milk. Schmidt is representing himself in court and said in an opening statement that shows “the respect to the individual’s freedom has been lost or wilfully ignored.” He insists raw milk has been proven safe over generations, despite what Health Canada says, and is against conventional thinking that food “will kill us unless we process it to death.” Copyright © 2009 - -- -- Letters to the Editor torsun.editor@sunmedia.ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2009 12:42:07 -0600 From: "David R.G. The court today unanimously overruled an Arizona appeals court that threw out evidence found during such an encounter. The case involved a 2002 pat-down search of an Arizona man by an Oro Valley police officer, who found a gun and marijuana. The justices accepted Arizona’s argument that traffic stops are inherently dangerous for police and that pat-downs are permissible when an officer has a reasonable suspicion that the passenger may be armed and dangerous. On Friday, University of Ottawa student Marc Kelly was arrested by the Ottawa Police while giving a public presentation to members of the University community. The Ottawa Police were acting on instructions given by the University to remove Kelly. Kelly was detained in jail for several hours until the Ottawa Police verified that the University provided false information. Kelly was released without additional charges. Kelly's supervisor, Prof Denis Rancourt, was also arrested and removed from campus. The Allan Rock administration is instructing the police force to suppress free speech on campus. Univeristy of Ottawa Legal Counsel Alain Roussy confirmed in a meeting earlier that day that the administration filed a police report to request the banishment of Marc Kelly in response to the mass emails sent out by Kelly in November. Kelly was arrested and bannished on Dec 1st for allegedly disturbing by shouting at the Senate meeting. Students and Professors need to mobilize and stop the administration from taking over our university. There is political corruption, and until we see this, our education is in danger. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This Friday, January 30th, MacDonald Hall auditorium, 7pm. Marc Kelly will continue his presentation to expose the administration, and attempt to communicate what he thinks is needed to defend our education. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you care about the future of education, you need to come to this event. ============================================= CDE DECLARES OTTAWA FREE SPEECH MOVEMENT OPEN: ============================================= The Committee for the Defence of Education (CDE) at the University of Ottawa declares that the Ottawa Free Speech Movement was started on Friday January 23 2009 when physics student Marc Kelly and physics professor Denis Rancourt were arrested by Ottawa Police, under instruction from the University, for attempting to present political research in the MacDonald Hall auditorium, as part of the Cinema Politica/Academica open weekly series hosted by professors Rancourt and Claude Lamontagne. Trespass laws and bogus criminal charges have been used to prevent free speech on North American campuses before and since Berkeley's Free Speech Movement of the 60s and these occurrences have multiplied on Canadian campuses in recent years; and in recent months at the University of Ottawa under the Rock administration. This, in an Orwellian climate where the Secretary of the University, Nathalie Des Rosiers, who heads the university legal department and who has implemented the oppression, has recently been elected next General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA). The CDE vows to keep Cinema Politica/Academic open and free from political censorship and police suppression. Join us this Friday January 30th (MacDonald Hall auditorium 7pm) when Marc Kelly will continue his presentation on campus corruption, accompanied by Denis Rancourt. By Kirby Ferris Proponents of "gun control" are screaming bloody murder over Democratic New York Governor David Paterson's appointment of little known Kirsten Gillibrand to replace Hillary Clinton in the United States Senate. Now get this: The NRA gives Democrat Congresswoman Gillibrand an "A" for her anti "gun control" stances. This is weird. Why? Because Governor Paterson has been given an "F" for his "gun control" stances by the same group. Additionally, insiders report that New York Senator Charles Schumer, of all people, was Gillibrand's staunchest advocate! Weird upon weird, I say. In case you didn't know, Senator Charles Schumer is arguably the most notorious (reviled?) anti gun ownership advocate in the history of American politics, and is ranked at least an "F triple minus" by every pro gun ownership organization. So how do you explain Schumer's advocacy of Gillibrand to Paterson? Seriously, what the heck is going on here? Did Chuck Schumer get an AR-15 for his birthday, go shooting, and see the error of his ways? Is he planning to turn on (rhetorically) his fellow anti gunners like Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, and that screeching dingbat Carolyn McCarthy? Nah, something tells me that isn't what's going on. Are Paterson and Schumer sending some sort subtle/not-so-subtle message to President Obama? Does Paterson have some hidden beef with Obama? Does Schumer have some beef with Obama that goes back to the way Madam Clinton was treated during the primaries? After all, Chuck would have been way at the front of the appointments line with a President Hillary. We should never forget that politics is mostly gutter fighting, deceit, and revenge. And therefore, pro gun activists should not be an all too trusting bunch when it comes to politicians. We've been betrayed for decades by people we thought we could count on, recently G.W. Bush and John McCain amongst others. And now, from out of the woods of upstate New York comes this attractive, blonde, somewhat Sarah Palinesque, gun rights activist to apparently carry our banner into the dragon's lair? Sorry, but you can color me suspicious. However, President Obama's plate is wriggling with immediate, high priority, conundrums. He faces two losing (and socially unpopular) military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq. Staring him in the face is a transportation infrastructure falling to pieces, a health care system tattering in the breeze, the somber threat of another 9-11, twenty million illegal aliens ensconced within our borders, a tanking global economy, and an American dollar that is on the ropes. Could it be that the red herring wavers of "gun control" simply won't be able to get his ear right now? Is "gun control" maybe (as he has indirectly implied) going to be a non-issue for his first term? Do you believe in the tooth fairy? And now there is Democrat chatter of Gillibrand doing a "180" on her pro gun stances. Is this a lie to calm the victim disarmament advocates in Liberalville . or is it the truth, and part of a bigger scheme? Ayn Rand wrote a famous novel titled "Atlas Shrugged". A memorable line in the book is: "Who is John Galt?" (The answer to the question pays off in the story.) I would paraphrase Ms. Rand's question: "Who is Kirsten Gillibrand?" To one degree or another, the answer to that question will pay off in our lives. And pretty soon. You can bet on that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Read our latest endorsements about the JPFO film "2A Today for The USA" ............. In trying to understand the need for it all, she ignored the fact that hunters don't 'slaughter' animals for sport in Canada. They kill to eat the meat, just like any other predator. Who can question so many years of human evolution? Hunters appreciate nature too - its beauty as well as its providence. Perhaps Shelley can give her camera to the coyotes to take pictures with, so they don't 'unnecessarily slaughter' the rabbits and mice. http://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1397787 Misplaced indignation Posted By Brent Weber Posted 5 days ago Righteously indignant Kerry Carswell said it is morally indefensible to kill Gods creatures yet fails to see that hunting has done a lot less carnage to the world than religion has. http://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1397792 HUNTING Posted By BRUCE EDWARDS Posted 5 days ago HUNTING RIGHT, WRONG, SPORT OR HOBBIE - CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT. As a national past-time, hunting and fishing is a great way to get outdoors and spend time with the family. What I also find concerning, is the misinformation that is spread about the nature of hunting. It is not cruel to animals. One shot kills are much less invasive and painful than your local slaughterhouse. I sincerely hope Kerry Carswell is a vegan, and does not buy beef from the grocery store. Hunting is not killing a defenseless animal. It is conservation. If hunters did not exist, deer populations would reach record highs, to the point where there would be a huge increase in the number of vehicles hitting deer. That would be an interesting news story "the left lane is a little slow due to a doe and a fawn blocking traffic". Kerry could always stop and take a picture of it I guess. If hunting was cruel to animals it would not exist. I take great satisfaction knowing the burgers that I am eating for supper came from a deer that I tracked and hunted for 3 days, then finally shot it. Do you feel pride knowing that the cow that turned into your steak's throat was sliced to allow it to bleed to death?? I didnt think so. http://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1397785 Anti-hunting crowd throwing rocks from glass houses Posted By Marty Gobin Posted 5 days ago Dear Editor: Letter-writer Kerry Carswell opposes hunting, describing what she refers to as "killing any of God's creatures" as being "morally indefensible." It is interesting to see that she has chosen to write a letter opposing hunting. When was the last time she wrote a letter of condemning the immorality of the meat section at the grocery store? Surely, there must be a published letter somewhere, otherwise one might consider her to be a person with morals of convenience. I would also be interested to know whether Ms. Carswell eats vegetables or lives in a house. Every year, countless field mice and other critters get killed by combines during harvesting, or pest control, in order to supply her with food. Additionally, if she lives in a house instead of in the wild, she funded a development company which killed thousands of animals through loss of habitat. She also made a decision to take up a spot in a newspaper with plenty of circulated copies, ensuring that that many more trees--habitat for "God's creatures"--would die. Personally, I don't oppose these practices. I believe that the loss of animal life is not wrong if it results in the betterment of human life. I happen to support eating good meals, living in nice dwellings, and disseminating free thought through newspapers. But according to the premise of Ms. Carswell's anti-hunting letter, she has no doubt engaged in what she defines as "morally indefensible" practices. Maybe she should stop acting morally superior to people who have a different source of food than her and understand that she's not a better person simply for not personally having to wash any blood of the animals she's responsible for killing off of her hands. Glass houses, and whatnot. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2009 15:16:12 -0800 (PST) From: Bruce Mills Subject: Toronto Sun - Toronto police eased woman's fears http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2009/01/26/8146091-sun.html Toronto police eased woman's fears Pursued gunman in west-end neighbourhood By ROB LAMBERTI, SUN MEDIA The Toronto Sun TORONTO -- Billi-Jo Cox says she feels safe despite the shots that rang out around her west-end home on Saturday night. She saw police around her house and knowing they were there eased her fears. Cox said she and her roommate were told to go into the basement of her Campbell Ave. house until police caught the gunman. The man was wanted after two men robbed The Beer Store on Symington Ave., north of Bloor St., 7:30 p.m. Saturday and fired a shotgun blast at a Toronto cop. The officer escaped with a minor injury -- a shotgun pellet wound to the forehead. The suspects were armed with a pistol and what was believed to be a sawed-off shotgun. They fled the beer store in separate directions. One, who was later arrested, went north, while the other fled down a lane, between Symington and Campbell. Police cornered him in a lane behind Campbell, south of Wallace Ave., where they exchanged gunfire with the man. A police car parked on a rail line was plowed by a Via Rail train. No injuries were reported. "You know what? I felt really safe," Cox said. "Once we saw the police and everything under control, it was actually a safe feeling. "We were sent to the basement ... and they came in the house because they needed access to the back," she said. "There were two shots fired earlier and after there were more shots fired," Cox said. "It sounded like a hockey puck ... hitting the steel garage doors," said David, another neighbour. "But at 10 p.m., I thought maybe it was a shot because then I heard all the sirens. "There was somebody in the lane and (police) were yelling at him and then a shot was fired and I think the cops shot back," David said. "At one point, I heard them yelling about the yellow house," he said pointing down the street. "Like, he was holed up in one of these two houses." Toronto Police Association President Dave Wilson said officers survived the incident because their training kicked in. "They did an incredible job," he said. Wilson said while crime statistics are down, gun violence is spiking. He said the association's top three issues are gun crimes, improving response times and staffing issues. Jeron Powell, 32, of Toronto, appears in court on Feb. 11, facing many charges, including three counts of attempted murder.
