The owner of the weapons bought the firearms at a gun show in Calgary and was transporting the hand guns back to Melfort. The firearms, with trigger guards, were stored in lock boxes inside the locked compartment of a 2008 Chevy three-quarter-ton. On Saturday, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the truck broke down just west of Drumheller and was left unattended. The truck was also left alone Saturday night and Sunday morning outside a Kindersley hotel. "The number of stolen guns concerns us," said Sgt. Doug Coleman, RCMP "F" Division's Crime Stoppers Police Co-ordinator. "They Could be used in many potential criminal activities. We want to do everything we can do so they don't end up on the street." The hand guns stolen include seven Chaparral Arms, Colt, 1873, single action revolver, 45 COLT (army reproductions); two Chaparral Arms, Colt, 1873, single action revolver, 44-40 WIN (army reproductions); one Chaparral Arms, Colt, 1873, single action revolver, 357 Mag (army reproduction); three Norinco, NP 20, semi-automatic, 9mm Lugar; one Norinco, NP 40, semi-automatic, .40 caliber; and one Smith and Wesson, 22A, semi automatic, .22 calibre. Mr. Reid seems to be unaware of a number of incidents which would contradict his assertion that gun owners, and gun shops, are not a significant source of crime guns. Burnaby gun shop the Royal Sportsman, along with Merrica Trading, diverted some 2,000 firearms into illegal markets and, over a period of a few months, some 57 guns were stolen from Wholesale Sports in southeast Calgary. A Red Deer store owner was charged with one count of uttering threats, two counts of possession of marijuana and 13 counts of unsafe storage in conjunction with the seizure of 100 firearms and more than 500,000 rounds of ammunition. Furthermore, it was a legal gun owner who shot and killed Const. Vu Pham. These incidents should remind us that all illegal guns begin as legal guns, and that while a large percentage of crime guns are smuggled into the country, a significant percentage are stolen from legal owners and shops, diverted or misused by their owners. While gun control is not by any means a panacea, it is an essential component of any strategy to preventing gun violence. As a psychiatrist, I have had occasion to witness the efficacy of Canada's gun control legislation in action and have recommended use of the information contained in the database to ensure that unstable individuals do not have access to firearms. One need merely look to the example set by the U.S. to see that ignoring gun control in favour of other measures is ineffective in combating gun violence, given that the rate of gun violence in the U.S. is five times higher than the rate of gun violence in Canada. To professionals such as myself, it is obvious that any preventive measures against gun violence must include strong gun control. MONTREAL GAZETTE - APRIL 10, 2010 LETTER: Register flare-guns? http://www.montrealgazette.com/Register+flare+guns/2785312/story.html Are you ready for the silly question of the day? Following the flare-gun assault in Longueuil yesterday, what do you think is the best course of action? A - The government should invest a few billion dollars in a flare-gun registry and licensing scheme for law abiding boaters. B - The government should invest time and money to help the sick and disturbed individuals in our society. C - Nothing. Flare-gun assaults are not newsworthy. Michel Trahan, Verdun - ----------------------------------------------------- The Gazette - April 8, 2010 Man arrested for flare gun assault in Longueuil http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/arrested+flare+assault+Longueuil/2778253 /story.html MONTREAL - Longueuil police have arrested a man for armed assault Thursday after two people were shot with a flare gun at a shopping mall on Chambly Rd. The two victims were taken to the hospital with bruises and flare burns, Longueuil police Const. Dominic Arsenault said. A passerby was also treated for shock. The suspect, in his 40s, is familiar to police in the area and is believed to have mental health issues, Arsenault said. It appears to have been a random attack, police said. A man carrying a flare gun, similar to those used by boaters, shot at a car in the parking lot at the Place Desormeaux strip mall just before 10 a.m. The flare struck the driver, who was sitting in his parked car, and injured his shoulder. The assailant then shot at a woman standing outside the mall, hitting her in the abdomen and arm, before entering the mall and firing off more flares. No one inside the mall was struck, police said. When police cornered the man in the mall, he dropped the weapon and gave himself up. The suspect has yet to be charged. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 2010 11:36:01 -0600 From: Joe Gingrich Subject: "We're going to reload." http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/04/08/honey-tea-partiers-bask-glow-conservative-women-palin-bachmann/?test=latestnews Tea for Two: Partiers Bask in the Glow of Palin and Bachmann By Cristina Corbin April 08, 2010 When Rep. Michele Bachmann grabbed the microphone and electrified a crowd of Tea Party loyalists on Thursday, the Minnesota Republican's words -- as well as a few other characteristics -- bore striking similarities to another galvanizing force within the movement: Sarah Palin MINNEAPOLIS -- When Rep. Michele Bachmann grabbed the microphone and electrified a crowd of Tea Party loyalists in her home state of Minnesota on Thursday, her words -- as well as a few other characteristics -- bore striking similarities to another galvanizing force within the movement: Sarah Palin. Palin and Bachmann have emerged as leading figures within the Tea Party movement. In fact, many loyalists say they see the two as one and the same. "They both have an anti-establishment, populist orientation," said Sal Russo, chief architect of the Tea Party Express, which has endorsed Bachmann in her re-election bid. "They're pretty much on the same page." "They're both moms so there's a lot of similarities," said Annette Bystrom, who traveled from Ellsworth, Wis., to hear Bachmann speak. "They both stand for God, the truth and their families. "I'd have to sit down with them to really know the differences," Bystrom added. Bachmann, who is seeking a third term in the House, formally aligned herself with Palin on Wednesday when the two Republicans joined forces at a Tea Party rally in Minneapolis targeting President Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress. But while both are heroes of the Tea Party movement, don't let the similarities fool you. Both women are "proud conservative leaders" who "break Republican female stereotypes," said Bachmann's campaign manager, Gina Countryman. But Bachmann is an active legislator bound by certain House protocols. Palin, who resigned as governor of Alaska last year, is not. Palin gained instant stardom when John McCain plucked her out of the governor's mansion to be his vice presidential running mate in 2008. Bachmann's gains in the world of politics, by contrast, have been steady and gradual. "Sarah had a meteoric rise," said Tea Party Express member James Lyle, whereas Bachmann's ascent to power "seems more like grassroots growth," he said. Palin was to speak Friday before the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, where many say she is building momentum for a possible 2012 presidential bid of her own. Asked about a possible Palin-Bachmann ticket on Wednesday, the former governor told Fox News "that sounds kind of cool." But Bachmann did not offer an endorsement. "I want to thank Governor Palin for breaking the barrier by being a woman as a vice president on the ticket. She did a wonderful job, I think, as the vice presidential candidate. And I think the world is her oyster. If she wants to run, I think that she has tremendous support from the American people," Bachmann said. Bachmann has avoided making specific comparisons between Palin and herself. "I think we're both unique individuals and I'm grateful for her gifts and talents and how she's using those in our country," Bachmann said in an interview with FoxNews.com. "She's trying to be influential in her realm and I am as well in my realm. "I don't try to fill her shoes," she said. Still, the comparisons -- physical, spiritual, intellectual or otherwise -- are sometimes uncanny. Palin has portrayed herself as a non-career politician, a "hockey-mom" whose "common sense conservative" principles make her well-suited to lead the country. Bachmann's self-characterization closely mirrors Palin's. "I am the chief coupon-clipper at our house," she told a cheering crowd of 200 conservative activists outside the Minnesota state capitol. "Whoever balances the checkbook knows we gotta bring in at least a little bit more than what you put out." Bachmann went on to say that she and her husband, parents of five biological children (the same number as the Palins) as well as 23 foster children, "always bought used cars" and "clothes in consignment stores." "We've lived like all of you live because we balance the checkbook," she boomed. Palin, a Fox News contributor, addressed the comparisons between her and Bachmann on Wednesday. "Michele and I both, we have strong faith that we, fighting as hard as we can for our country and supporting those who share our values, share our principles and, at the same time, putting our lives in God's hands and asking him for direction," she said. Some observers say the two women, who appeared together on stage accompanied by Martina McBride's "This One's for the Girls," are so alike they could be confused for one another. In a side-by-side photo lineup, seven out of a random sampling of 20 Tea Party-goers at one Minnesota rally had trouble telling who was who. "They could be sisters," said one Tea Party member clad in a "Palin for President" t-shirt at a rally in Duluth, Minn., on Thursday. "They're both Christian, conservative, attractive, intelligent and feisty," said Jim Erlemeier of Duluth. To the delight of their fans and the consternation of their critics, Bachmann and Palin also share campaign styles, especially when it comes to attacking the opposition. Bachmann asked whether Barack Obama's views were "un-American" during the 2008 presidential campaign -- a statement she later retracted -- and has called his health care overhaul the "crown jewel of socialism." Palin similarly seized on Obama's past association with controversial figures like Bill Ayers, seeking to cast doubt on his patriotism by claiming he was "palling around with terrorists." She also has suggested that several of the Obama administration's policies are socialist. But Republicans and Tea Party activists aren't the only ones who relish the similarities between the two women. Democrats and liberal groups do, too, characterizing Bachmann as a mere clone of Palin, whom they depict as a polarizing figure. "Bachmann has echoed Palin's sentiments," said Julie Cox of Minneapolis, a recruitment worker for Moveon.org who attended a protest outside a Palin-Bachmann fundraiser on Wednesday. Bachmann "beat the drum" on Palin's widely debunked "death panel" statements over the Democrats' health care agenda, added David Callahay, also with Moveon.org. But asked about the efforts to cast her and Bachmann as wacky, out-of- touch, far right-wingers, Palin said bring it on. "It just makes us work harder. It makes us, I think, produce -- more, produce better, help us articulate our positions even clearer. And that's fine. We're up to the challenge ... "If it's open season on us, we're not going to shy way from the message that we have that we need a smaller, smarter government back on the side of the people. And we're going to certainly not retreat. We're going to reload and we're going to keep standing up for what we believe is right," Palin said. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 2010 12:02:01 -0600 From: Joe Gingrich Subject: NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS ALERT EXCERPT: NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS ALERT Vol. 17, No. 14 04/09/10 Constitutional Carry Passes Arizona House, Awaits Governor's Signature: This week, Senate Bill 1108 passed the Arizona State House by a vote of 36 to 19 with five absent votes. The apprehension occurred Monday afternoon after a neighbour claimed to have seen a man carrying a gun by the mobile home park near Correlieu Secondary. Rodney Moffat, 49, was walking past the school, to a store to buy milk when police apprehended him. "They, they threw me down," Rodney sobbed as he spoke to the Observer. "They handcuffed me. They yelled at me." Afterwards, Rodney was taken to hospital, where he was treated with tranquilizers. On Tuesday, he was icing his wrist and bruised ribs. The ordeal began when Rodney was outside his home, playing with a neon orange and silver plastic toy space gun, which Rodney had tucked into the waist of his pants. A neighbour mistook the gun and called RCMP. Before they arrived, Rodney had returned the toy gun to his house, then embarked on his journey for milk. Rodney's parents - Eva and Karl - cannot believe police arrested their son. "Can't they tell the difference?" Karl said, shaking his head. Karl, a retired police officer of 31 years with the Windsor Police Department, moved his family to the Quesnel area 16 years ago. "Rodney's been here that entire time," Karl said. "He poses no threat. He's 90 pounds!" "I have no idea why they used such excessive force," Eva added, taking a deep breath. "We feel betrayed. They're the ones who are suppose to protect him." RCMP issued a release stating police must take any report of open possession of a firearm seriously. "This is even more of a concern when an incident involving a possible firearm occurs near a school," the release states. It goes on to say "once examined the toy gun appeared quite realistic tucked into the man's pants. "It is very difficult to tell the difference between a genuine hand gun and a toy replica." "I didn't mean to..." Rodney starts, then stops, his whole body vibrates, he mashes a tissue under his thick glasses. "I didn't mean to cause any trouble, dad." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 2010 11:47:08 -0700 From: Len Miller Subject: Barb Kane seems While gun control is not by any means a panacea, it is an essential component of any strategy to preventing gun violence. That's a lie, and our footage from today proves it. http://humanesociety.org/news/dispatch/2010/04/lfti_dark_day.html The baby seals are so helpless out here. So young that they are not yet swimming, these three-week-old pups are visible targets on the tiny pieces of ice they're floating on. The sealers, out to make a quick buck, are clubbing and shooting every one they find. It is unimaginably hard to be up here-in a helicopter 1,000 feet in the air-bearing witness to what is happening. Today, unlike on the first day of the slaughter, we saw a Canadian coast guard boat and an enforcement plane in the area. But the government representatives did nothing to stop sealers from shooting seals and leaving them to suffer. Nothing to prevent sealers from impaling seals on metal hooks and dragging them across the ice, throwing seals onto boats, and cutting open seals-all without checking once to see if the seals were unconscious. The Canadian government did nothing to enforce the few inadequate regulations that are on the books. In front of us, two pups lay on one ice pan, blissfully unaware of a sealing vessel bearing down on them. One of the baby seals was shot but not killed. He thrashed around in agony, lifting his head. Just feet away from him, the other seal was shot seconds later and lay bleeding on the ice. The first seal continued to suffer, raising and lowering his head in a pool of his own blood. The sealer finally arrived and then clubbed the wounded seal just once before impaling him on a metal hook and dragging him away-without ensuring the seal was even unconscious. How many Canadian politicians can continue to stomach the cruelty we witness out here? How many will continue to try to claim the slaughter is humane in the face of our irrefutable evidence of abuse, year after year? The ProtectSeals team will not let them do it. We will expose the cruelty on these ice floes to the world.
