This historic accomplishment was triggered when Kim won the gold medal in Women's Skeet. "The hunting and shooting community is reveling in Kim's astounding accomplishment from this weekend's Olympic Skeet Shooting gold medal performance," said SCI president John Whipple. "Not only did Kim set an Olympic record of shooting 99 out of 100, she also is the first American athlete to win a medal in five consecutive Olympic Games. She embodies the excellence of an Olympic legend." "SCI is proud to sponsor Kim Rhode during her historic win. Her performance definitely puts women's skeet on the map for the general public to fully appreciate. Thank you to Kim for being a true ambassador for the sport," concluded Whipple. It’s just a very bad joke on the Hutchinson family and our justice system as a whole. The maximum sentence for obstruction of justice is 10 years in prison. This is a very serious criminal offense. Robinson’s sentence? One whole month of house arrest, followed by 11 months on probation. The gun discharged in his locker, but no one was hurt in the incident. Perry Kenneth Hupet, 44, earned a $900 fine and a criminal record after his improperly stored Colt .45 handgun was taken by an 11-year- old boy to school in January, accidently discharging in his locker. No one was hurt in the incident, but at the sentencing hearing Monday afternoon Judge Daryl Labach said Hupet "should have and could have done more" to ensure the gun was secured. Hupet also pleaded guilty to possessing unlicenced handguns, the Colt .45 and a 9mm Beretta found at his home after police were called. Crown prosecutor Darren Howarth argued that Hupet should pay a $1,200 fine, while defence lawyer Morris Bodnar argued Hupet should receive a conditional discharge — meaning he would not have a criminal record at the end of the sentence — and pay $1,200 to a charity that fosters firearm safety, such as the Canadian Wildlife Federation or Ducks Unlimited. Labach did not agree that Hupet should receive a conditional discharge. It was not in the public interest, he said. The 11-year-old boy — the son of Hupet’s girlfriend, who is now his fiancee — took the handgun to his class to show off to friends. He had taken the gun from a locked case underneath Hupet’s bed while Hupet wasn’t home. The keys to the case were kept in the bedside table and the boy found the keys after searching the house twice, Bodnar said. Ammunition for the gun was also kept in the case and the boy loaded the gun before taking it to school in his backpack. During class, the teacher told police she noticed the boy go back to his locker, at the back of the classroom, an unusual number of times. The final time he went back there, while he was handling the gun in the backpack, the gun went off. The bullet pierced a metal water bottle as it exited the backpack, then lodged in another child’s jacket in a nearby locker. The police were called and Hupet was “very concerned and co- operative,” said Howarth. He consented to a search of his home, where police found a second handgun in a locked case and five rifles in the furnace room. Four of the rifles were locked up but a fifth one was not. Howarth said the Crown might have agreed to recommend a conditional discharge “if not for the circumstances” of the incident, where everyone is lucky that no one was seriously hurt or killed. “(The regulations) are there to ensure handgun owners take the proper due diligence and care ... to prevent something like this from happening,” Howarth argued. The defence, however, argued Hupet took all the steps he could take to keep the guns safe. They were locked in a case with the keys stored separately and he had told the boy never to touch them when Hupet wasn’t present. “You can take all the precautions but you can’t always deter someone,” Bodnar said. Hupet has decided that no matter what the outcome of the case is, he will not have any guns in his home anymore, Bodnar said, since Hupet and the boy’s mother have since become engaged and the boy will be living at Hupet’s home in the future. In regard to the unlicenced handguns, Bodnar said they had previously been licensed but the licences expired and Hupet didn’t remember to renew them. Judge Daryl Labach reserved his decision until 2:15 p.m. Monday afternoon, saying he wanted some time to consider the case. Labach commented that the facts themselves, about the storage of the guns and the licensing, weren’t particularly egregious, but “how this all came to light” is egregious — and dangerous. “Only by the grace of God did some 10- or 11-year-old not end up with a bullet (in him),” Labach said. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jul 2012 17:01:45 -0600 From: Larry James Fillo Subject: Re: right not to be a victim- V15 #199 Len seems to be the only retired police officer concerned and speaking out about the right not to be a victim of violent crime, (and he's not getting any younger, unlike the rest of us :) There are thousands of retired police officers. Police said the girl was walking in the area of Flora Ave and Andrews Street in the city's North End, at about 4:30 a.m. on July 26. She was confronted by a group of six males, one of whom was an 18- year-old carrying two guns. He then handed one of the guns to a 17- year-old and instructed him to shoot the girl, police said. The 17-year-old pointed the loaded gun at the girl and threatened to shoot her as well as her house. But the girl turned and walked away unhurt. She then called police. That afternoon, officers located and arrested the 17-year-old about a block from the scene, on Powers Street. The 18-year-old was found Saturday, about another block further away, near Selkirk Avenue and Salter Street. That led to a search warrant being issued for a residence on Juno Street. A loaded handgun was found during that search, police said. Both the 17-year-old and 18-year-old are facing a slew of weapons- related charges as well as charges of uttering threats. They have been detained in custody. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jul 2012 21:04:10 -0600 From: Larry James Fillo Subject: An a salt gun designed to only for killing New designs, like the proverbial better mousetrap, and so much more fun. No one was hurt in the incident, but Judge Daryl Labach said Perry Kenneth Hupet, 44, should have done more to ensure the safety of the gun. "It was by the grace of God that nobody was hit," said Labach of the incident which happened on Jan. 26 at St. Peter School. Hupet -- who had entered into a guilty plea earlier today to the improper storage of a handgun -- told his defence lawyer Morris Bodnar that he will no longer store guns in his home. The boy, the son of Hupet's then girlfriend and now fiancée, didn't live with Hupet at the time, but visited the home frequently. He had become interested in the firearm after Hupet had shown him the Colt. 45. Hupet had explained to the boy, who is originally from the Philippines where gun laws are not as restrictive, the dangers of the firearm, the court heard. But despite the talk, the boy remained interested in the gun and had wanted to show it off to his friends at a birthday party. Hupet told the boy "no" but "much like the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden" the boy remained tempted, Labach said. The court heard that the boy had found the handgun in a locked case underneath Hupet's bed while the 44-year-old wasn't home. The keys to the case were found in a bedside table after the boy had searched the home twice. Ammunition for the gun was also kept in the case and the boy loaded the gun before taking it to school in his backpack. The gun went off during class while the boy was handling it. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the boy can’t be publicly identified or charged. After the incident, Hupet was "very co-operative" with police, the court heard. He agreed to a search of his home where a second handgun and five rifles, stored in a furnace room, were also found. In addition to the fine, Hupet will be required to forfeit his handguns and one of the rifles to the Crown. The other four long guns, which were properly locked up, will be returned to Hupet. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2012 12:20:32 -0600 From: "Joe Gingrich" Subject: Is Mitt being neoconned into war? http://www.humanevents.com/2012/07/31/pat-buchanan-is-mitt-being-neoconned-into-war/ Is Mitt being neoconned into war? By: Patrick J. Buchanan 7/31/2012 Has Mitt Romney given Israel a blank check for war? So it seemed from the declaration in Jerusalem by his adviser Dan Senor, who all but flashed Israel a green light for war, signaling the Israelis that, if you go, Mitt's got your back: "If Israel has to take action on its own in order to stop Iran from developing that capability, the governor would respect that decision." "No option would be excluded. Gov. Romney recognizes Israel's right to defend itself and that it is right for America to stand with it." What does "stand with" Israel, if she launches a surprise attack on Iran, mean? Does it mean the United States will guide Israeli planes to their targets and provide bases on their return? Does it mean U.S. air cover while Israeli planes strike Iran? This would make America complicit in a pre-emptive strike and a co-belligerent in the war to follow. What Senor said comes close to being a U.S. war guarantee for Israel, while leaving the decision as to when the war begins to them. This country has never done that before. And what does Senor mean by Israel's need to act "to stop Iran from developing (the) capability" to acquire nuclear weapons? The collective decision of 16 U.S. intelligence agencies in 2007 - that Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapon - reportedly reaffirmed in 2011 - has never been rescinded. Nor has the White House produced any hard evidence Iran is building a bomb. Moreover, Iran's known nuclear facilities are under inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Does the government know something the American people are not being told? Undeniably, Iran, by enriching uranium to 3.5 percent, then up to 20 percent, has a greater "capability" than five years ago of building a nuclear weapon. But Japan, South Korea and Brazil also have that capability - and none has decided to build a nuclear weapon. Gov. Romney did not go as far as Senor, but he, too, seems to be saying that not only is Iran's possession of a nuclear weapon a casus belli for the United States, even an Iran that is capable of building such a weapon is intolerable. "The regime in Iran is five years closer to developing nuclear weapons capability," said Romney. "Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority." Preventing what outcome is "our highest national security priority"? Stopping Iran from building a bomb? Or stopping Iran from being able to build a bomb years from now? The governor seems to be aligning himself with Israel's hawks who are demanding that not only must Iran swear off nuclear weapons forever, Iran must cease all enrichment of uranium, and dismantle the facilities at Natanz and Fordow. Romney's policy is zero enrichment, said Senor. Tehran must understand that "the alternative to zero enrichment is severe, and that's why the threat of military force has to be critical." This is tantamount to an ultimatum to Tehran: Either give up all enrichment of uranium and any right to enrich, or face war. Here we come to the heart of the issue, which may be impossible to resolve short of war. Unlike its neighbors Israel and Pakistan, Iran has signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and has no nuclear weapons. The ayatollah has said they are immoral and Iran will not acquire them. But under the NPT, Iran claims the right to enrich uranium and seek the benefits of nuclear technology. And in that decision, the people of Iran stand behind their government. Is denying Iran the right to enrich uranium a reason for America to plunge into its fifth war in that region in a generation? That appears where we are headed. Reportedly, Obama's national security adviser recently briefed Bibi Netanyahu on the specifics of U.S. contingency plans to attack Iran. Has Congress been briefed? Have the American people been consulted? Or are we simply irrelevant? A decade ago, this country sent an army up to Baghdad to overthrow Saddam and strip Iraq of a vast arsenal of chemical and biological weapons we were told it had and was preparing to use. We were misled; we were deceived; we were lied to. Before we outsource to Bibi and Ehud Barak the decision to take us to war with a country three times the size of Iraq, we need to know: Was the U.S. intelligence community wrong in 2007 and 2011? Is Iran hell-bent on building nuclear weapons? If so, where are they constructing and testing these weapons? Finally, if Iran is willing to permit intrusive inspections of its actual and suspected nuclear sites, but insists on its right to enrich uranium, should we go to war to deny them that right? But if we are going to go to war again, this time with Iran, the decision should be made in America, according to our Constitution, not by any other country. ------------------------------ End of Cdn-Firearms Digest V15 #202 *********************************** Submissions: mailto:cdn-firearms-digest@scorpion.bogend.ca Mailing List Commands: mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca Moderator's email: mailto:owner-cdn-firearms@scorpion.bogend.ca List owner: mailto:owner-cdn-firearms@scorpion.bogend.ca FAQ list: http://www.canfirearms/Skeeter/Faq/cfd-faq1.html Web Site: http://www.canfirearms.ca CFDigest Archives: http://www.canfirearms.ca/archives To unsubscribe from _all_ the lists, put the next four lines in a message and mailto:majordomo@scorpion.bogend.ca unsubscribe cdn-firearms-digest unsubscribe cdn-firearms-chat unsubscribe cdn-firearms end (To subscribe, use "subscribe" instead of "unsubscribe".)
