Postmedia News reports that Canadian diplomats who participated in a UN discussion on the illicit trade of small arms and ammunition were told the "play a low-key, minimal role" in the debate. There's leadership for you. Find a seat in the back and try to keep your head down. The newsgroup said the diplomats were told their main objective was to safeguard Canadian gun owners' rights on the international stage. According to a briefing note sent to Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, it was outlined that Canada's delegation would also endure "Canada does not enter into any new commitments that are inconsistent with its domestic laws and regulations on firearms." It went on to note that Canada's intention not to sign on to anything was likely to prompt a backlash from traditional friends and allies. In a quick digression, it seems like a bizarre tact to take at a conference specifically focused on how to approach illegal gun trafficking and not legal gun ownership. But surely they had their reasons. For one, rural gun owners are the Conservative party's bread and butter, and a slip on the international stage could have erased some of the progress they were seen making by erasing the long-gun registry. Kenneth Epps of the anti-gun group Project Ploughshares told Postmedia that the objective shows a distinct lack of vision. He said: To be narrowly focused on the domestic concerns of a minority of Canadians at a time when there are millions of people around the world affected by armed violence is clearly not what most Canadians want the Canadian government to be doing. Still, the stance is likely to go over gangbusters with Canadian firearms owners. Sheldon Clare, president of Canada's National Firearms Association, told Yahoo! Canada News last month that the country's gun control measures go too far, lumping the current Conservative government in with the "successive, oppressive firearms control regimens" that have been in power for decades. So they've got some work to do there. So what if Canada hides under the table at a UN conference about illegal guns, as long as they don't appear to be hindering gun ownership at home? After all, Canada's international reputation has taken a nosedive under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, but it hasn't had an impact on his fortunes at home. Why stop now? [ Yahoo! And the Special Treatment for Spouse-Abusing RCMP members just keeps on coming. by Christopher di Armani - March 6, 2013 http://christopherdiarmani.com/ One of my ongoing pet peeves is the special treatment RCMP members receive at the hands of our so-called justice system. Let's say, just for clarity, a man works at a shooting club. He's in charge of the place and has access to firearms all day long. At night he goes home and beats his wife, leaving her with bruises on her neck. Twice. Nobody would bat an eye at preventing this man, by court order, from keeping his guns or having access to them, even though as a result of this court order he would lose his job since a firearms license would be a prerequisite for that job. They certainly wouldn't give him an exception to have his guns only while at work, so long as he promised to lock them up when he went home at night. The rules are vastly different, sadly, when the abusive spouse happens to wear a yellow stripe down his leg and the RCMP shield on his chest. Then suddenly the rules put in place to stop abusive spouses like him evaporate. RCMP Corporal Bartholomew Doerr is one such man. A Kamloops news report makes it quite clear the ongoing double-standard for RCMP member treatment is alive and well. The RCMP placed Corporal Doerr, stationed at the Clearwater RCMP Detachment in highway patrol, on administrative leave (aka an RCMP paid vacation) once spousal abuse allegations came to light. Constable Sadie Doerr is clearly afraid of her estranged husband, a fact the court order makes quite clear: Crown prosecutor Alexander MacDonell said that by entering into the peace bond, Doerr agreed to several facts. Those included that that Sadie fears injury from him and that two violent incidents occurred. Doerr admitted to exchanging blows with his wife on Sept. 4 this year. On Oct. 8, he pushed her with enough force to cause redness on her neck, MacDonell said. Peace bonds are made available through the Criminal Code, often in cases involving domestic conflict between individuals. Peace bonds usually impose a restriction on possessing firearms, but MacDonell said that imposition could result in Doerr losing his job. When a Crown prosecutor cares more about the abusive man losing his job than protecting the woman that man readily admits to beating at least twice, one really has to wonder how society's priorities got turned so upside down. Crown prosecutor Alexander MacDonell ought to be ashamed of himself and his conduct in this case. This young lady should read her message to Congress.. Here's the story... My 14 year old daughter, Daphne, and I went to a gun rally at the NH Capitol in Concord on Saturday, Jan 19, 2013. I don't even own a gun, but I'm a strong believer in the Constitution and the wisdom of our Founders especially when it comes to government taking away our freedoms, and I don't like the direction Obama is taking the country on that issue. You know, America, land of the free, and all the core strengths that made America great. I made up a bunch of signs and Daphne prepared a letter before the rally, thinking she might hand it out to anyone who was interested. While attending the rally, Daphne noticed that the speaker had stopped talking and that he was handing the bullhorn to anyone who wanted to speak. She pointed that out to me, and soon she went over to the Capitol steps, got in line, and waited for her turn. After fighting her way to the front of the line, she stood there, on the steps of the NH State Capitol, and read a shorter version of the letter below. She brought the house down. After the cheers had died down, dozens of people shook her hand and congratulated her. A couple of reporters interviewed her briefly and other photographers took her picture. Just before she left, a representative from the New Hampshire Assembly talked to her and asked if she could come and speak at a hearing on gun control on Tuesday, Jan 22, 2013. Daphne said, Sure. On Tuesday, we picked her up from school at 12:00 noon and drove to Concord. We found our way to the Legislative Assembly Hall, Room 204. The room was packed and there was a line down the hall and around two corners. Soon, they moved the meeting to another room. The second room also proved too small. Finally, they sent us across the street, up to the large chamber in the Capitol Building. The room was near capacity. About ninety-five percent of the people were pro 2nd Amendment rights. The Representatives and PACs got to speak first, then the common folk. Daphne was in the first 10 folks to speak who were not representing a group. She was poised, though a little nervous, and spoke clearly to the crowd. When she was done, she brought a copy of her speech to the front of the chamber where the representatives were sitting, and they fought over who would get to take it from her. The moderator had previously silenced the hall from cheering or clapping, but people told her they would have cheered if they could as they shook her hand on the way out. The whole proceeding took more than 3 hours. TRANSCRIPT: Delivered to the New Hampshire Legislative Assembly January 22, 2013 Dear citizens of New Hampshire, Four days ago, I was across the street for a gun rally on the steps of the Capitol. I had never been to a gun rally before. I expected it to be all about hunters and guns. I was surprised: People were not afraid of not being able to hunt. They were not afraid of criminals at all. Do you know who they were afraid of? The Federal Government. I was shocked. They were afraid of the government taking away their freedoms. The reason I went to the rally in the first place was that I heard children, like me, talking with President Obama about guns on the radio. I think those kids were far too young to make policy, and got it all wrong. Naturally, I don't want my mom or dad to die either, nor my friends or family. But I learned in school that the First Amendment gives us our Basic Freedoms, like Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion and Freedom to Assemble. To protect our God-given rights, our Founders gave us the 2nd Amendment: The Right to Bear Arms. My Civics teacher taught us that the reason our Founding Fathers gave us the right to bear arms is to protect ourselves from the government of man because when man is given absolute power, he becomes absolutely corrupt. In 1776, guns freed us from the abuses of King George. Today, guns keep us free from tyranny by government. If President Obama wants to take our guns, isn't he taking away our means to protect our right to freedom? Wasn't the 2nd Amendment given to us to protect our 1st Amendment rights? It's not by chance that those are the first two amendments. They were the two most important gifts our Founders gave the American people. I don't know. I'm just a 14 year old girl, and that's what I thought I learned in school. Did Mr. Obama learn something different in school than that? I think it is terrible for someone to use a national tragedy for political gain, don't you? So, when I heard Mr. Obama issued 23 gun control orders in the wake of the Newtown tragedy, I was upset. In school I was taught executive means to execute laws -- not make them. When did that change? Didn't the president swear an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution? Doesn't the 2nd Amendment state: "the right for people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." ˇ Tell me how 23 orders on gun control is not an infringement. Can someone please tell me that? Has King George returned? I hope New Hampshire members of congress remember their pledge and do not use this tragedy to create unjust laws. So I ask myself, what gun would our Founders want their citizen militia to have today to protect us from a government greedy for power. I think Thomas Jefferson would recommend a semi-automatic rifle with 50-round clips, and pistols that hold 20. But, I'm sure George Washington would demand these arms. Just so you know, I don't even own a gun, nor does my mom, or dad. But when I'm old enough, I want the right to buy a gun if I want to, so I can protect the America that I love. I hope I never need one, but I always say, "plan for the worst and hope for the best". Unfortunately, that's sort of why the government is taking away our guns: they are planning for the worst Americans, and not thinking of the best. Maybe the question we should be asking is what caused the morality of the United States to decay? Are parents no longer teaching their kids "thou shalt not kill?" I want to live in an America with laws that protect the best people on Earth, not the worst, don't you? Wouldn't that be more free? Wouldn't that be more American? Isn't freedom what America is all about? The right to bear arms is our best guarantee to live free. Finally, at my track meet at UNH on Sunday, I read the banner on the wall. It said three words: Tradition. Pride. Excellence. I hope and pray that New Hampshire will continue its tradition of excellence and lead the way for the rest of the county, and never infringe on my rights. May the people of the great state of New Hampshire carry on their long tradition of freedom, so we can proclaim with pride the words our forefathers gave us: Live Free or Die! This is our United States. This is our New Hampshire. And that should never change. Live Free or Die, New Hampshire! Measures will include: mandatory minimum sentences for the criminal use of firearms; strict monitoring of high-risk individuals; crackdown on the smuggling; safe storage provisions; firearms safety training; a certification screening system for all those wishing to acquire firearms legally; and putting more law enforcement officers on our streets. Property Rights Policy i) A Conservative Government will seek the agreement of the provinces to amend the Constitution to include this right, as well as guarantee that no person shall be deprived of their just right without the due process of law and full, just, and timely compensation. ii) A Conservative Government will enact legislation to ensure that full, just and timely compensation will be paid to all persons who are deprived of personal or private property as a result of any federal government initiative, policy, process, regulation or legislation. http://www.cufoa.ca/articles/licensing/licensing_29_nov_2012.html Garry Breitkreuz MP once said, "C-68 proved registration does lead to confiscation. The Liberals broke their promise that registration would not lead to confiscation when they used Bill C-68 to ban 553,000 registered handguns without any evidence that these legally owned firearms were a risk to anyone's safety. Bill C-68 amended Section 117.15(2) of the Criminal Code giving the government such sweeping power that they can ban any or all firearms in Canada and not even the Supreme Court of Canada could overturn it."(3) Section 117.15(2) is part of Bill C-68 and remains vital law. All the legal appeals to retain private possession of these handguns have been lost. "Most" of these handguns "are gone" and only a few remain due to "grandfathering".(8) The confiscations were done under the Harper govt.s' watch as "The RCMP CFP Mobile Service Delivery Vehicle Unit" was developed. These trucks now travel across the country, providing firearms and ammunition destruction and disposal to all law enforcement agencies.(4) In addition to seizing and destroying handguns, on Dec. 20, (2011) the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program served hundreds of registered owners of Armi Jaeger AP80, a .22 calibre semi automatic carbine rifle, with a 'notice of revocation'. As a result, the AP80 can now be owned or used only by people possessing certain rare "grandfathered" prohibited licences."' On Dec. 30, (2011), the RCMP issued a second notice of revocation for the Walther G22 rifle. This rifle, also a .22-calibre semi-automatic, was prohibited because the stock on the rifle is now considered a "prohibited device" - a prohibited aftermarket stock. (6,7) The firearms community has not been provided the number of AP80s or Walther G22 rifles destroyed or grandfathered. Couple went to Jewish temple, WalMart before death Police have since put together a timeline tracking the couple's whereabouts on the day before their death. Flournoy said Wise and Pichosky were at the local Jewish temple in Hallandale Beach on January 8. Later that evening, the couple went to WalMart, which police confirmed using surveillance video from the store, the chief added. On the morning of January 9, the couple spoke to a family member via FaceTime video calling on their iPhone, said Flournoy. On January 10, the couple's bodies were found. Last month, police released video from a neighbour's surveillance camera hoping to identify a woman seen walking to the rear of the couple's home on Jan. 9. "It could help find the people that did this to my mom and to Donnie... Call the police, help our family get through this difficult time." Flournoy said he was "confident" this case would be solved in due course. "It angers me that someone came into this home and killed these two people who, [from] what we've been able to identify, they have no enemies," he said. "They were nice people.
