The coalition will be submitting a request to the Supreme Court of Canada, requesting it be able to intervene alongside the province. It's still not clear if the case will even be heard however. "Quebec is the only province that remains with access to records on who owns rifles and shot guns," said Wendy Cukier, president of the coalition. "Canada is one of the only countries in the entire world that is moving to relax its gun control rather than strengthen them." The group is also calling for support, and asking the population to continue writing politicians about the issue. "It's not enough to read the paper and shed tears over the latest tragedy," she said. "We need people to get politically engaged." The group is asking for Quebecers to send a letter to the new public safety minister, who is also a Quebecer. "The consequences of weak gun laws are evident when we look at our neighbours south of the boarded," Cukier said. "And the power of the gun lobby to erode sensible gun laws is event there and here too." ------------------------------------------- Gun Advocates Sue Quebec & Canadian AG By DARRYL GREER - Tuesday, August 20, 2013Last Update: 9:21 AM PT http://www.courthousenews.com/2013/08/20/60420.htm (CN) - Quebec is illegally operating a gun registry, though the federal government scrapped it last year, Canada's National Firearms Association claims in Federal Court. While the federal government scrapped the national long-gun registry last year, destroying registration data to the chagrin of many police organizations, the Quebec provincial government defiantly refused to turn over data on its residents, so as to maintain its own gun registry. Co-plaintiff Shawn Bevins claims the country's Registrar of Firearms, the Firearms Commissioner of Canada and Quebec's Chief Firearms Officer are still illegally collecting data on non-restricted gun owners and sellers. The plaintiffs claim the defendants are illegally operating a registry and collecting data, and that the Firearms Commissioner of Canada is illegally refusing to destroy records contained in the scrapped Canadian Firearms Registry. The plaintiffs, or applicants, claim Quebec's Chief Firearms Officer is "illegally refusing" to tell legal gun dealers that they no longer have to register sales of non-restricted firearms to Quebec residents, and are no longer under threat of sanctions for failing to register sales, transfers or for accepting guns for service or repair without verifying the firearm is registered. The officer is "forcing Quebec based firearms dealers to comply with legislation that has been repealed by Parliament," the application states. According to a notice on the RCMP website for the Canadian Firearms Program: "Until further notice, due to ongoing litigation, the CFP is continuing to accept registration of non-restricted firearms from Quebec residents." Canada scrapped the registry for being too costly and punitive on law-abiding long-gun owners. Politicians in the ruling Conservative Party claimed victory after scrapping the program, but police agencies were not happy, as the registry was used by front-line officers nearly 14,000 times a day across the country. Gun registry data was accessed as recently as this month by police in Quebec during a 20-hour standoff. The issue is particularly sensitive in the province because the gun registry was set up after a mass shooting claimed the lives of 14 women at the University of Montreal in 1989. The plaintiffs are represented by Me Guy Levergne, of Saint-Lazare, Quebec. ------------------------------------ CANADA'S NATIONAL FIREARMS ASSOCIATION - Thursday, August 15, 2013 QUEBEC NAMED IN COURT ACTION OVER ILLEGAL OPERATION OF LONG GUN REGISTRY http://nfa.ca/news/quebec-named-court-action-over-illegal-operation-long-gun-registry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, August 23, 2013 11:23 pm From: "Dennis R. The International Coalition for Women in Shooting and Hunting (WiSH) have issued the following media release: Media Release 24 August 2013 Crime Commission Firearms FoI Fail: What Are Our Governments Hiding? Freedom of Information (FoI) requests and review by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) have failed to bring to light the content of the 2012 Australian Crime Commission (ACC) National Illegal Firearms Assessment (NIFA) report. Responding to OAIC questions, the ACC claim the summary of findings that was provided by the Minister for Home Affairs via media release represents the only unclassified material considered “appropriate” for release from the 99 page NIFA report. International Coalition for Women in Shooting and Hunting (WiSH) Chair, Dr Samara McPhedran, said “It is beyond belief that only a handful of carefully chosen dot points out of a 99 page document can be released.” “We have to ask: what could be so embarrassing that state, territory, and federal governments are determined to keep it quiet? What policy failure could be so damaging to governments’ reputations if it became known?” “The past few months have seen growing revelations about an ongoing and complete lack of security of firearms registry data across multiple jurisdictions.” “Most recently, a concerned sergeant within the New South Wales Police Force has raised serious fears that details of hundreds of thousands of firearm owners and legally owned guns have fallen into the wrong hands, via the gun registry.” The ACC specifically name New South Wales as a jurisdiction where police representatives have argued against further information being released from the report. “This begs the question of whether the report has implicated firearms registries as taxpayer-funded, government-run shopping lists for criminals,” said Dr McPhedran. The burly, shaggy-haired 23-year-old tearfully told loved ones "it's going to be okay" as he was led away in handcuffs at Saskatoon's Court of Queen's Bench on Friday. Bear will be sentenced in October for the attempted murder of retired RCMP officer Robert Laidlaw. Laidlaw had offered to help fix Bear's flat tire near the Rudy Landing development just north of Outlook on May 23, 2012. Bear declined, and Laidlaw became suspicious. A confrontation ensued, and Bear threatened to slit Laidlaw's throat before stabbing him. During the trial, there was conflicting testimony about how many times Bear stabbed Laidlaw. Justice Murray Acton accepted the doctor's testimony that there were two deep stab wounds near the victim's heart and lungs. Acton said those injuries, combined with the threat, proved there was intent to kill. "This is also supported by the statement of the accused to the police officer that 'I want to go away for life for this.' This is certainly not the statement of an individual who only intends to injure the victim in order to steal his truck," Acton wrote in his decision. Bear pleaded guilty to aggravated assault during his trial in June. Defense lawyer Darren Winegarden had argued Bear was only trying to hurt Laidlaw in order to steal his truck, and suggested Laidlaw was fabricating the events in order to raise the charge from aggravated assault to attempted murder. Since Bear was found guilty of attempted murder, Acton did not accept the guilty plea for aggravated assault and dropped the charge. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2013 00:43:07 -0600 From: Larry James Fillo Subject: "Bear stalks 2 women in 3-hour ordeal" Bear stalks 2 women in 3-hour ordeal Annapolis Valley pair flee to hunter's shack CBC News Posted: Aug 23, 2013 2:05 PM AT Last Updated: Aug 23, 2013 10:19 PM AT Two Nova Scotia women say they had a close escape from a black bear while travelling in the Annapolis Valley. The three-hour ordeal ended with the pair cowering in an old hunter's shack while the bear pawed the walls of the building outside. Nikki Latta, 23, and Lindsay Jones, 25, headed into the woods near Port George on the Bay of Fundy shore Monday evening. Latta was familiar with the area, but Jones wasn't. The two joked about a bear attack — Jones is terrified of them. Then a passing dog got spooked and ran away. 'It's following us. It's hungry, it's not scared. It's going to eat us.'—Nikki Latta “I looked up at Lindsay and there’s the bear, standing literally five feet behind her. Our hearts stopped. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing,” Latta said. She gaped at the creature. Jones realized something was wrong. “I turned around and there was my worst nightmare,” Jones said. “I covered my eyes and stupidly hugged a tree.” Screaming didn’t faze the bear. “I tried to sound aggressive, but it didn’t scare it,” Latta said. Instead, the bear ambled over and sniffed Jones’s purse. Latta bolted. Jones followed. Barefoot vs. bear foot The two women raced down a ravine, losing their flip-flops. Jones says they moved faster barefoot. “We grabbed each other's hands and started running. After a few minutes we thought we were OK. We thought it had our purses, and that was fine," Latta said. "It turns out it was right behind us that whole time, quietly following us. I thought that was it. It’s following us. It’s not scared, it’s hungry. It’s going to eat us.” The women ran again, uphill this time. But the bear stuck with them. “It got a little more aggressive and started huffing and puffing and making a gurgling noise. I started running. I was falling and it was right behind me,” Latta said. Safety in a hunter's shack Luckily, the pair stumbled upon a hunter’s shack 40 minutes after first seeing the bear. Jones broke the window and dove inside. Latta crawled through the broken glass to reach sanctuary. “It was the happiest moment ever,” Latta said. The bear strolled around the camp — the women say it even pawed at the door. At one point, it reached inside and grabbed the drapes. The women called police, but couldn’t tell them exactly where they were. The officers arrived and sounded their siren from a distance. That finally scared off the bear. The armed officers found the women and escorted them to safety. The women say they'd been in the shack for about two hours. The women estimate the incident stretched almost three hours. Latta and Jones suffered no injury more serious than a few cuts. Both got matching bear paw tattoos to commemorate the encounter. “It’s my favourite spot in the world. I’ve never heard of black bears being there.” Latta said. Bruce Nunn, with the Department of Natural Resources, said the department has hired trappers to try and catch the bear. ========================================================================== Let me correct the headline for this story to: "Bears for gun control" As the number of hunters is reduced by gun control so will be the number of hunter's shacks to hide in from a bear. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2013 07:19:19 -0700 From: "Clive Edwards" <45clive@telus.net> Subject: SMART METERS AND GUN CONTROL A Vancouver senior trying to prevent the installation of a BC Hydro "smart meter" on his home called police to remove trespassing installers from his property. The Canada Border Services Agnecy said four handguns were discovered at the Pigeon River Port of Entry, which is near Grand Portage, on Aug. 12. Officers found a loaded handgun in the bedroom of a motorhome, two loaded handguns in the motorhome's bathroom, and another handgun in a vehicle being towed behind the motorhome. Two canisters of pepper spray were found in the tow vehicle as well. The motorhome traveller, John Harold Hargreaves of Crystal River, Florida, spent four days in Canadian prison before pleading guilty to failing to report the firearms and carrying a concealed weapon. He was sentenced to time served plus a $4,000 fine. In a separate incident at Pigeon River, authorities allegedly found parts of a semi-automatic firearm dispersed throughout a vehicle on Aug. 14. Zachary Kennedy Williams, of Culver, Oregon, was charged with failing to report, willful evasion, possession of prohibited goods, and smuggling. He was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in a Thunder Bay courtroom next month. Meanwhile, a loaded revolver was allegedly found in a vehicle at the Fort Frances border crossing on Aug. 14. Eric Michael Groner of Cleveland, Texas, was charged with failing to report, willful evasion, possession of prohibited goods, and smuggling. He was also released on bail and is scheduled to appear in a Fort Frances courtroom next week. More than 250 shooters, including 68 youth shooters, embarked on three courses of fifteen targets last weekend at the FRGC archery range. Some of the targets on the courses were full sized moose, elk, sheep, deer, bears and exotic targets including poisonous frogs, crocodiles and dinosaurs! All of the youth participants received awards for their participation (sponsored by Teck) and enjoyed a balloon and zombie shoot Saturday afternoon. The second leg of the Elk Valley Extreme qualifier was held all day Saturday and the finals were Saturday night. The first qualifier shoot was held during Sparwood's 3-D shoot in June. The two clubs and Kootenay Archery sponsor the Elk Valley Extreme. 144 shooters tried to qualify for the 22 spots during the two qualifier shoots. The top five shooters advance, along with the top two women and top two youth from each shoot. Two wildcard positions are chosen at each event also. 15-year-old Ross Grimm from Medicine Hat was the overall winner of the Elk Valley Extreme and took home a $1,000 gift certificate from Kootenay Archery. Chris Mummery took second place and claimed a $500 gift certificate and third place went to last year's champion Jamie Brehaut. Out of the 45 shooters registered for this year's event, Calgary's Kevin Cole swept most of the categories including winning his singles class in a shootout. Cole also won his class in doubles and snagged the highest overall score, hitting 235 out of 250 targets. In singles, Cole tied with Mike Cain with 72 hits in the A class, leading to a shoot-off in which Kevin won by hitting 22 out of 25 targets. The Class B finish saw a four-way tie between Norm Kittelson from Barons, Pat Sheehan from Carstairs and Oldman River Gun Club members Tony Quarin and Dexter Bonertz. Kittleson won the class shoot-off by shooting a perfect 25. Class C saw a tie between Bob Binfet from Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek's Jordan Ramias who tied with 71 points. Nels Larsen is one of three disabled veterans to receive the pricey Action Trackchair wheelchairs from the Police Officers Association of Michigan, which is providing the chairs free of charge to the disabled vets. Jim Tignanelli, president of the police officers' union, said Larsen was selected to receive the chair because of the many things he does for others. '[Larsen is] just a very giving guy that nobody has ever given anything,' Tignanelli told MLive.com. 'We really came across a guy that we can change his life, and I think he has done that for a lot of people.' Amongst his many acts of giving, Larsen - whose friends call him Skeeter - founded the 'Walleyes for Warriors' fishing tournament for other vets returning from combat. The goal of the tournament is to provide recreational therapy for the soldiers, as well as say 'thank you' and 'welcome home.' Larsen received the chair in the parking lot of Pat and Jerry's Family Restaurant in Auburn, where a large group of friends and family gathered to surprise him his new set of wheels. 'I couldn't figure out what was going on,' Larsen said of being surprised with the chair. 'Then I saw 'Skeeter' on the back of that chair.' He went on to say, 'I don't know what to say - this is just something else.' Larsen also was presented with a folded flag from the Midland Police Department honor guard in thanks for his service. Larsen's condition stems from exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970. He has back troubles and other ailments that force him to walk with a cane, which has prevented him from being able to go hunting and fishing. The chair - which costs upwards of $12,000 - has tracks similar to that of a tank on each side that allow it to travel over most terrains with ease. Larsen's came complete with a cup holder and a place for his fishing pole. 'Everybody who has gotten one of these chairs has called it a life-changing experience,' Tignanelli said. When asked what his first trip would be with his new chair, Larsen answered, 'I'm going deer hunting.' 'I'm really thankful, I'll tell you that,' he said. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, August 24, 2013 11:06 am From: "Dennis R.
