Their daughter, was another murder victim, was found in her home. The murder suspect was, if I recall, correctly found dead by suicide. His murder weapon was a knife. The murder was caused by his "mens rhea", his guilty mind, his intention to commit the crime. This is a foundational concept of the system of British Common-Law, and in it's widespread adoption in it's former colonies as is Canada. The Common-Law system is one of the great legacies of British Imperialism. Why Newfoundland, the land of a very low crime rate and lots of homes with firearms would be concerned about "restricted" weapons makes no sense, and less so in the context of this story. Any rifle or shotgun could have sufficed for this murderer's purpose of two individuals in separate locations. The same applies to it's possible use for the suicide. Restricted weapons are not designated as such because of any higher degree of lethality, most are less so than common hunting big game rifles and shotguns. The reason they are restricted is for the same reason as some people don't like black cats. It's due to superstition. The introduction of more and more superstition into the Canadian Criminal Code causes it to regress further back to ancient pagan practice and culture. Allowing such ideologues, and High Priests thereof, to attain positions of power in Canada is dragging us back to ancient political practices, too. Whether in acts of physical or intellectual courage or sometimes both, that was historically a high standard. It was a high one sought to be emulated but not easily and not by many. By the present lower of standards by what we labels as heros. We lower the standards, the models of behaviour for the entire Canadian nation and culture. Return to the real definition, to the higher standard, and it will be met. We'll all be the better for it. =================================================== Rush' driver Lauda challenges our definitions of heroism (October 22, 2013) American Voices 5:30 p.m. EDT, October 22, 2013 PARIS -- Our standards for heroism really have tanked, and a new Hollywood movie has driven that point home -- at 180 mph. Ron Howard's breathtaking new movie, "Rush," is the story of the famous 1976 season of Formula One legends Niki Lauda and James Hunt, during which world champion Lauda had a near-fatal crash at Germany's Nürburgring track. The film underscores just how easily impressed we've become as a society since the Lauda-Hunt era. I walked out of the theater wanting to punt a Bieber. Just 42 days after Lauda's disfiguring crash -- a priest had read the Austrian driver the last rites -- he climbed back into his Ferrari to defend his championship against Britain's James Hunt. If that doesn't leave you slack-jawed, Lauda's post-racing heroics (omitted from the film) ought to do the trick. Lauda is as well known here in Europe for his business accomplishments as he is for those of his racing career, having founded two airlines: Lauda Air (now defunct) and NIKI (now a subsidiary of Air Berlin). In 1991, Lauda Air Flight 004, a Boeing 767-300ER, crashed in Thailand, killing all 223 passengers aboard. Boeing was prepared to blame pilot error rather than a mechanical problem with the thrust reverser that Lauda had suspected to be the cause. That's when Lauda, a commercial pilot himself, stepped in. In an interview with The Guardian, Lauda explained: "I said, 'Take a 767, load it up like it was with two pilots, deploy the reverse thrust in the air and, if it keeps on flying, I want to be on board. If you guys are so sure that people can continue to fly these airplanes without being at risk, then let's do it.'" Boeing declined, and the company acknowledged that a mechanical failure had led to the tragedy. Without Lauda offering to put his own life on the line in the greater interests of the truth, who knows what similarly fatal consequences might have transpired. Now THAT is a hero. But take today's icons. No, really -- take them, please. What kind of standards do we set, if any, for those we pronounce "heroes," "role models" or "icons"? It seems to be enough just to win sporting contests, or sing well, or survive a high-profile divorce from a billionaire, or appear on airbrushed magazine covers. Merely pushing the kill button on a drone joystick, at zero risk to oneself, gets people war medals now. The truth about genuine heroes is that they aren't popular in their time -- at least not in the likeable sense. Leadership, a quality that bona fide heroes typically possess, rarely makes one a sweetheart of the masses. They tend to ruffle feathers, as Lauda did and continues to do. To wit, "Rush" emphasizes that, unlike his rival Hunt, Lauda wasn't exactly Mr. Popularity among other drivers. If you're focused on pleasing others, then you aren't truly leading -- you're merely reflecting. During that fateful week at Nürburgring, Lauda called a meeting of his fellow racers and implored them to boycott the race because of dangerous track conditions. He lost that vote but turned out to be spot-on in his assessment -- tragically so. The willingness to take an unpopular stand is common among leaders, because if being one was easy, then more people would assume leadership roles. It often rubs people the wrong way when a leader eschews popular opinion and the status quo in favor of steadfast commitment to principles (not to mention the inevitable envy of their success). Leaders often have to settle for the grudging respect they earn through consistent proof of merit. To them, it's all about the long game. Lauda consulted extensively with "Rush" screenwriter Peter Morgan of "Frost/Nixon" fame. In the film, Lauda (portrayed by Lauda doppelgäng er Daniel Brühl) says to James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth): "A wise man can learn more from his enemies than a fool from his friends." Take the celebrity your kids idolize. Now take the celebrity who recently engaged in a public catfight with your kid's favorite celeb. Now try to imagine Lauda's words of wisdom coming out of either of their mouths. Better yet, take your kids to see "Rush" so they can learn what their standard for heroism ought to be. Documents revealing details about the NSA's Boundless Informant program show that information regarding billions of phone calls and computer communications was collected by the agency from across the world. Boundless Informant "allows users to select a country on a map and view the meta data volume and select details about the collections against that country," according to the Guardian, which first reported on the top secret program earlier this year. Multiple leaked screenshots of the Boundless Informant program show that information on around 124.8 billion phone calls were collected in just 30-days this year, according to documents released by the Guardian and other news sites. The documents provide a window into the sheer volume of data being collected by the NSA as late as March of this year, according to the Guardian. Critics of the NSA's multiple data collection programs, which include PRISM, argue that innocent Americans run the risk of having their personal communications monitored. Its defenders maintain that the program has been a key tool in the fight against terrorism. It is unlikely that the NSA examined the content of all of these calls, though it seems possible that the security organization could single out any of the snatched calls and other communications. The sheer extend of the NSA's data collection effort were compiled from the multiple sources and organized on Wednesday by members of intelligence website Cryptome, which regularly publishes government documents and other information. Much of the information recorded by the NSA appears to have originated in the greater Middle East. The majority of the calls monitored by the NSA appeared to have emanated from Pakistan and Afghanistan, where 13.76 billion and 21.98 billion calls were respectively collected over the time period, according to the Boundless Informant "heat map" revealed by the Guardian. About 1.73 billion calls, or "DNRs" (Dialed numbers recorded), were collected from Iran, while 1.64 billion were traced back to Jordan. Additionally, some 6.28 billion calls from India were collected. Perhaps the most controversial element of the program is its efforts to collect both phone and computer data from Western nations that have friendly relations with the United States. Boundless Informant appears to have collected information from hundreds of million calls traced back to Germany in a single 30-day-period, according to documents published by Der Spiegel Online. Spain accounted for another 61 million and Italy for 46 million, according to the published screenshots and tallies posted to Cryptome. France's Le Monde newspaper alleged this week that the NSA recorded more than 70 million phone calls through January of this year. However, U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper immediately rejected the claim. Another 97 billion bits of information were pulled by the NSA from global computer networks, according to the map and original story by the Guardian.
